Quinyon Mitchell 2024 NFL Draft Profile
The 2024 NFL Draft class of Cornerbacks is pretty strong this year, with potentially four guys going in the first round. One of those players who should expect to hear their name on that Thursday is Toledo’s Quinyon Mitchell. Mitchell has been arguably one of the biggest risers during the pre-draft process, killing the Senior Bowl and following that up with a stellar showing at the NFL Combine. What does his draft profile look like? Let’s talk about it.
Let’s cut to the chase. I have Mitchell as my CB1 going into the draft. That may seem like a huge jump, seeing that he wasn’t even really on my radar as a top player in his position or even a second-round guy, but after watching him play live in Mobile my entire opinion changed. He had a stellar five INTs (including four against Northern Illinois, with two returned for touchdowns) in 2022, 46 pass breakups in three seasons as the starter, and a combined QB rating when targeted of around 53. That’s stellar.
There is no doubting the pure man-to-man coverage skills of Quinyon Mitchell The backpedal is silky smooth, the pad level always stays in an optimal position, and can break downhill with great speed. He showcased this blazing speed (4.33 40 time) at the combine, and it shows on tape when he fluidly flips his hips to get back on go routes. The footwork is crispy, getting him moved around where need be. He has long arms, allowing him to be very disruptive at the point of catch.
Is there even a ton to critique Mitchell on? I only have really three little notes. He can bite at times on the pump fake, on double routes as well. Needs to show a little patience when he opens his hips. He also tends to run with his man a little too long before recognizing a run play in the backfield. Don’t get it twisted, though, as Mitchell is a very solid tackler and is more than willing to mix it up with running backs and tight ends.
I said it above, and I will say it again. You’re looking at my CB1 in the 2024 NFL Draft. Quinyon Mitchell will be a plus starter in year one, and I don’t see him getting out of the top-15 of the draft. Selfishly, I am hoping the Steelers move up and snag him, but whatever NFL team turns in the card is going to sleep like a baby after night one, knowing they got a stallion (if you know, you know).
