We here at Vendetta covered just about every single wide receiver in the 2024 NFL Draft. We’re rounding things out with Malik Washington. Let’s just cut to the chase and review what the Virginia wide receiver brings to the table. Enjoy his 2024 NFL Draft profile!
Washington was not featured during the stock report series or in the Combine review post. Full transparency, I leave a few players off the Combine list because my eyes need a break. Plus with Washington, I feel like I know exactly who he is.
The long and short answer is Washington needs to play in the spot. Don’t ask him to go outside or he will fail. It’s not who he is. Work the middle of the field and get open as a smaller target. Some profiles are more complex than others. With Washington, it’s slot receiver and that’s all there really is to it.
Washington checks in at 5-foot-8, 191. Former three star guy out of the state of Georgia that spent his four year career at Northwestern. Players use the transfer portal for different reasons. With Washington, he had a pretty good reason. He got his degree at Northwestern, then took his talents to try to increase his football stock in his 5th year. Smart kid and worked on his Masters at Virginia.
First two years at Northwestern were nothing. Finally started to emerge in 2021 and 2022 but the production wasn’t overwhelming. Finally broke out in a huge way in 2023 posting 110 receptions for 1,426 yards and nine scores. Went over 100 yards in nine of his last ten to close the season. The production is a check mark and the tape backs it up. Guy is tough to cover in the slot.
The measurables at the Combine were good too. Ran a 4.47, jumped 42.5 inches on the vertical, and 19 reps on the bench. Clearly a hard worker. Just a limited player in the sense that the route tree consists of the handful of things he does in the slot. Pretty good hands though and can make plays after the catch. Didn’t have the best QB play either. Virginia isn’t exactly a football powerhouse.
I would take Washington in the 6th or 7th round. Maybe he doesn’t produce as a rookie but you feel good that he can help you in the slot during the second half of his rookie contract.
