Fantasy Football: Stefon Diggs To Houston

Stefon Diggs was traded to the Texans, but what does it mean for fantasy football? That’s why you’re here so why beat around the bush and waste time on an intro paragraph nobody wants to read? Let’s get right to the good stuff.

If you read the trade grades post, embedded below but can seen here , you already know my thoughts on the trade. However, it’s more complex than that when it comes to fantasy. Diggs should be valued very differently depending on the format of the league you’re in. Long term, I want no part of this. For 2023, I’m listening depending on the price.

More details came out about the trade today. The Texans are treating this like a pure rental and it’s hard to blame them. Diggs has clearly lost a step and he’s a loudmouth. You might want to read this report by Schefter. It’s a rental and fantasy owners should keep that in mind.

For 2024, I don’t hate investing in Diggs fantasy wise. Half the battle in fantasy is finding a quarterback who can actually put up numbers. News flash, we learned CJ Stroud is pretty darn good. If Diggs has anything left, he should be able to put up fantasy relevant numbers. Rookie Tank Dell put up 709 yards and seven touchdowns in 11 games and I don’t think he’s even that good. What can established Diggs do in this same offense? Bobby Slowik is back as OC too.

I just think more than anything that expectations should be set. Nobody wants to admit this but wide receivers age just about as poorly as running backs. It’s just not quite as extreme. Brief stink aside with the Ravens, Dez Bryant has mostly been retired since 2017.

Did you know Dez Bryant is 35? Like as of this very moment, Dez Bryant is 35. He’s been out of the league for basically seven years. These guys age way faster than you think they do. Julio Jones is now 35 and fell off a cliff during his age 31 season. The exact season Diggs is about to head into.

He’s not the same guy and we have to recognize that. When the Bills traded for Diggs back in 2019, he was at 18 yards per catch. Last year he was down to 11. His legs are starting to go and when that happens, the drops start piling up. Diggs had 10 drops last year including one that cost the Bills the game against the Chiefs. 10 straight games to end the season in 2023, Diggs failed to record 90 yards in any of them. That’s with Josh Allen throwing him the ball with a heavy target share and no other top end receiver on the roster.

Again, I think Diggs can have a solid season. I just want no part of it long term and I’m not getting into a bidding war this year. Would you bet your life on Diggs being the clear cut WR1 in Houston? I wouldn’t. Nico Collins was really good last year and is only starting to enter his prime.

TLDR; I like Diggs in Fantasy but only if the price makes sense. That’s for you to determine based on your league settings. Just don’t go crazy and I’d probably rank Collins as the premier WR to own with the Texans.
