Jameis Winston Signs One-Year Deal With Browns

The Cleveland Browns have signed Jameis Winston to a one-year deal worth up to $8.7 million, according to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report.

Winston spent the last four seasons with the New Orleans Saints where he served as both a starter and a backup at various times. In 2023, he mostly delegated to the backup role behind Derek Carr; however, his duties were needed on multiple occasions.

In all likelihood, Winston will spend the majority of his time as the backup in Cleveland. That is the nature of the business considering the Browns gave Deshaun Watson $230 million of guaranteed money.

Despite giving Watson an absurd amount of money, the Browns have struggled at the quarterback position. In Watson’s two seasons as a Brown, he only played 12 games. In 2022, Watson was suspended for 11 games. In 2023, he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury. It does not help that Watson did not live up to expectations when on the field.

The addition of Winston gives the Browns a top-tier backup quarterback. That is highly useful considering the amount of time Watson has missed. If thrust into action, Winston has a live arm and will look to make big plays. At a minimum, he attempts to give his team a chance.

This move provides some clarity on the Browns quarterback situation. First, it means Joe Flacco‘s time with the team is over. Despite a solid regular season, he was not the backup Cleveland wanted to depend on. It also shows the Browns are not interested in playing Dorian Thompson-Robinson in meaningful games.
