Rob Gronkowski is back which potentially creates the best tight end room in the NFL. I’m not sure any team has a better trio than OJ Howard, Cam Brate, and Gronk. However, that doesn’t exactly mean we know what we’re getting. Howard has largely disappointed and we don’t have a single clue if Gronk has anything left. Should we be optimistic or pessimistic when it comes to Gronk’s fantasy potential in 2020?
It feels like Gronk has been out of the NFL for a while, but that really isn’t’ the case. The former University of Arizona star has only been out of the league for one year. It feels like longer because that 2018 season, Gronkowski looked like a shell of himself. 47 receptions for 682 yards and 3 touchdowns doesn’t represent the prime version of Rob Gronkowski. More so than anything, he was a great blocking tight end that Super Bowl winning 2018 season.
Want to hear something crazy? In 2018, Gronk has just 3 games with more than 4 receptions and finished the season with a career low 3 touchdowns. He finished as the 9th best tight end in fantasy. It makes absolutely zero sense but it’s true somehow. I’m not sure Gronk has to be the old version of himself. Even the shell of himself was usable for fantasy and the ceiling is much higher after getting a year to refresh his body.
What we don’t know is how the target’s will be split up. There are a lot of mouths to feed. Gronk is Tom Brady’s guy. However, we don’t even know if he will be the primary tight end in the offense. That wasn’t a question in New England. Gronkowski could be the 3rd best tight end in Tampa.
You want to talk about fantasy wildcards? This is the definition right here. Does Rob Gronkowski have anything left? Who the hell knows. Football can’t get here soon enough.
