Lucas Giolito Has Torn UCL, Likely To Miss 2024 MLB Season
The Red Sox signed Lucas Giolito in the offseason and the signing looks like a disaster before it ever began. Sometimes you get what you pay for and when you miss out on Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the season was pretty much over right there. Now it really feels over with this Giolito news.
Jeff Passan is reporting that Giolito is having elbow issues. The former White Sox, Angels, and Guardians starter has a torn UCL and appears set to miss the entire 2024 MLB Season.
Giolito, 29, appears set to undergo his second TJ surgery. The first was around the time he was drafted by the Nationals back in 2012. Giolito has a $19 million player option for next season. Something that appears to be a lock to sign after this news.
It’s absolutely brutal news for the Red Sox. Part of the reason why Boston signed the veteran right-hander was because of his ability to eat innings. In 2023, he logged a career-high 184⅓ innings. He’s made at least 30 starts in three consecutive seasons.
Without Giolito, the Red Sox rotation looks embarrassing again. Don’t forget, they already traded Chris Sale too so that wildcard factor isn’t even in place. The 5 man unit will probably consist of Brayan Bello, Nick Pivetta, Kutter Crawford, Josh Winckowski, and ???.
There should be an increased urgency to go get Jordan Montgomery. Something they have been flirting with all offseason. Time will tell if the Giolito injury pushes them more in that direction.
