Riley Leonard Enters The Transfer Portal

The NFL is on hold for Riley Leonard. However, he’s not returning to Duke either. The now former Duke quarterback has decided to enter the transfer portal. This news, of course, comes on the heels of Mike Elko leaving Duke to take the head coaching job at Texas A&M.

247 Sports was the first to report the news:

Leonard was off to such a hot start at Duke. The Blue Devils went 9-4 last season during Leonard’s sophomore campaign. They then started out 4-0 this year and then Leonard twisted up his ankle. Duke had a shot to beat Florida State and then it all went to hell. Now Elko is at Texas A&M and Leonard is out the door too.

Is Texas A&M the favorite to land Leonard? It’s pretty hard to ignore the Elko connection. Texas A&M does not have an established quarterback there. Conner Weigman sort of counts but he got hurt this year. Leonard would likely step in as the starter there while Weigman recovers from injury.

It’s probably also important to mention that Leonard came up through the high school ranks at Alabama. It seems likely that he will stay in the South. I guess you never truly know on that part.

Leonard has been frequently mentioned in the NFL Draft Stock Report series. He looks a lot like Daniel Jones did at Duke. However, this transfer certainly gives him the opportunity to show he can be much more. What can Leonard accomplish with a better overall team around him? Time will tell.
