Report: Greg Olsen Interested In Panthers Head Coaching Job
After starting the season 1-10, the Carolina Panthers fired head coach Frank Reich and quarterbacks coach Josh McCown.
Top overall pick Bryce Young will now have to play for interim head coach Chris Tabor. Though former 14-year NFL veteran and current FOX Sports broadcaster Greg Olsen would be interested in filling the position if he were approached about it, according to Joseph Person and Richard Deitsch of The Athletic.
Despite Olsen’s success in broadcasting, there is a real possibility that Olsen will be moved down from the No. 1 to No. 2 broadcasting team to make room for Tom Brady. In 2024, Brady is supposed to begin a ten-year deal with the broadcasting team, which could affect Olsen for a long time.
One problem is that Olsen has no real coaching experience. Although he played in the NFL for 14 years, the highest level of football he has coached is his son’s Pop Warner team. Despite this, the Panthers have gone through three head coaches in four years and the people that David Tepper is hiring just aren’t getting the job done.
It would be extremely unconventional, but it seems like the Panthers don’t really have much to lose. Maybe Olsen could fill another position to gain experience before taking on one of the most important jobs on the team.
The smart move would be to just stay in broadcasting. At just 38-years-old, Olsen has reached the peak of the profession. Carolina’s gig seems like an absolute nightmare, as that organization has so much to fix.
It is unlikely that Olsen would be hired for the head coaching job, but he does seem like someone players would want to play for. Regardless of what he does, his success off the field has been incredible. Even if Brady takes his spot for a long time, Olsen could likely find himself as one of the top analysts for another network if he were to leave Fox Sports.
