Former Bloomberg CEO Scott Havens will join New York Mets

The New York Mets continue to make executive moves. Former Bloomberg Media CEO Scott Havens will be the new president of business operations for the Mets, MLB insider Joel Sherman was among many to first report the news Monday.

Havens will join the team in January, reporting directly to owner Steve Cohen.

“Bringing someone on board of Scott’s caliber is an exciting development for the Mets organization,” Steve and Alex Cohen said in a statement. “Scott has vast experience leading world-class media and digital technology-led companies such as Bloomberg Media and Time Inc. and he’ll provide a modern vision and strategic direction for our organization.”

Scott Havens has been named president of business operations for the New York Mets. He had been the CEO of Bloomberg Media, which he joined in 2015. He will run all the day-to-day business such as legal and ballpark of the Mets except baseball operations.

Havens has been with Bloomberg since 2015 and only became CEO starting in 2022. Before Bloomberg, Havens spent time at Time Inc. and The Atlantic.

The Mets have been busy with off-the-field moves. Back in September, the Mets hired David Stearns as president of baseball operations. Trey Daubert will argue he’s the only one who can save the Mets, but Stearns is a much better option than Billy Eppler.

Speaking of Eppler, he resigned from the GM role shortly after Stearns was hired. It was clear Eppler would just become a puppet for Stearns, so he quickly dipped out.

Why Did Craig Counsell Turn Down The Mets?

Stearns’ first order of business was firing Buck Showalter, then hiring Carlos Mendoza to be the Mets’ next manager.

Before Mendoza was hired, there were rumblings of Craig Counsell signing with the team. Both Counsell and Stearns were together in Milwaukee, but the duo weren’t exactly “close,” and Counsell scratched New York off his list.

Havens and Cohen should make a good team. They’re going to have to if they want to pick the Mets out of the slumps. Despite having the highest payroll in MLB, the Mets were a major disappointment in 2023. They finished  75-87, best for fourth place in the NL East.

Cohen has made mistakes in the past with guys such as Eppler and Showalter. Perhaps he’s finally catching on and helping the Mets for the better. With plenty of offseason left, the Mets have a projected $236 million in payroll to work with, according to Spotrac. There aren’t too many excuses left, so Havens and Cohen will have a lot of work to cover.
