Yoshinobu Yamamoto: Do The Red Sox Have A Chance To Sign Him?

The Red Sox enter this Winter in a very interesting spot. They need pitching and not just one guy. Landing front-line starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto would be a total game-changer for the franchise. Does Boston actually have a chance to sign Yamamoto? It certainly appears that they’re in the mix.

SNY’s Andy Martino listed the Red Sox as a contender to sign Yamamoto. Both New York franchises appear to be highly interested as well.

“Boston is another big market possibility, in part because of Yamamoto’s friendship with Red Sox outfielder Masataka Yoshida,” Martino wrote. “New Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow was also said to be highly regarded by Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki when Breslow worked in the Chicago front office.”

For those who watched my offseason guide, you know by now that I believe Yamamoto should be the priority. Yamamoto, 25, posted a 1.16 ERA in the NPB last year. It sounds like he has a relationship with Masataka Yoshida too, which should help the recruiting process.

New Chief Baseball Officer, Craig Breslow has to come through here. If the Sox don’t get Yamamoto, they’re going to be forced to overpay a pitcher who is much older on a contract that may come back to really bite them down the line. Breslow needs to tell John Henry that he needs his version of David Price. Yamamoto has a chance to resemble just that except with the potential to be much better.
