WWE Legend tells story of Nashville wrestler trying to decapitate fan

Wrestling has been more than a livelihood for Jim Cornette so much as it has been an undying passion. He has been the center of controversy at the tail-end of his career, whether it be his questionable takes on modern wrestling or his numerous controversies–accused of prejudice and named in “Speaking Out.”

But with such a tenured career comes some downright ludicrous tales from the road, and Cornette shared just another during a recent episode of his Jim Cornette Experience podcast. During which, the former Smoky Mountain promoter dove into the life and crimes of Nashville wrestling icon, Pat Malone, otherwise known as the Green Shadow.

Recalling a story told to him by Malone’s second wife Sammy, Cornette set the scene:

“She would tell stories about Pat,” he said. “Because Pat would ride up like with the referee, Paul Morton or if [Bill] Dundee was booking he always got there early, or he was riding with the boys and Sammy was driving [with] ‘Teeny’ [Christine Jarrett]. So we go out to dinner afterwards and she would tell the stories.”

Cornette described Malone’s penchant for carrying a Barlow knife, given he was hated so much by fans in attendance:

“Okay, there’s wrestler’s exaggeration [but] Pat Malone as the Green Shadow had so much heat he carried a knife in his f*cking boot,” he said. “Not for potential double crosses in the ring but for the fans that were f*ckin hitting the ring to kill him. It was a Barlow knife because he’d always say, ‘I pulled out the old Barlow!’”

One time, a fan hit the ring to attack Malone, and Jim Cornette recalled Sammy telling him about his retaliation:

“This one guy hit the ring one time and stabbed him and Pat chased the guy out of the f*cking building and caught him in the parking lot,” he said. “When they pulled Pat off of him he was on top of the guy with his knife out trying to cut the guy’s head off by sawing from left to right. And Sammy’s laughing at it.”

Pat Malone retired from wrestling in the 50s with a career boasting a handful of World Championship reigns. He later became a wrestling photographer for magazines across the country, later working alongside Cornette in the role. He passed away in 1988 at the age of 87.
