Eli Apple was not the most beloved Saint in New Orleans. Apple’s career was very inconsistent in New Orleans after coming over via trade from the Giants. It sounds like the Saints are a lot more confident in their newer acquisition from the Giants. After claiming Janoris Jenkins from New York last year, they have been nothing been overjoyed with his presence.
That number two cornerback spot opposite of Marshon Lattimore is always going to be under some spotlight. Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen is confident that Jenkins can perform up to par in that role:
“Certainly, there’s an overall body of work that you utilize to try to form opinions about what a guy can do or can’t do,” Saints defensive coordinator Dennis Allen said Monday, via Luke Johnson of NOLA.com. “But there’s nothing like the experience of having a guy in your building. I can tell you just from my experience with him in that brief period of time.
“I felt like he was a real pro. I felt like he came to work every day with the intention of getting better. I think he was a great addition to our football team and I’m certainly excited about working with him again this season.”
“The more opportunity that we have to be around him and to evaluate him, the easier it is for us to really determine all the things he does well and try to put him in those positions as much as we can,” Allen said.
Janoris Jenkins played just 3 games for the Saints after being claimed. Jenkins was an instant success. In those 3 games, he recorded an interception, one forced fumble, and 15 tackles. Jenkins was much better in New Orleans compared to New York. Playing for a winning team goes a long way to changing that.
