Will The Dolphins Use Chase Claypool As A Tight End?

The Dolphins acquired Chase Claypool for a late round swap with the Bears. Now that Claypool is in the building, how does Mike McDaniel plan on using him? Could we even see Claypool deployed as Miami’s new tight end?

Before I get to McDaniel’s comments (because they’re hilarious) when Claypool was entering the NFL out of Notre Dame, I ranked him as the best tight end in the class. I still contend his best spot in the NFL is as a Big F tight end. The same way that the Saints turned Juwan Johnson into that sort of player.

When asked about that possibility, McDaniel went off on a hilarious tangent.

“Yeah, he’s a wide receiver. I mean, Mike White might be working as punt returner today — you never know. OK, so what you are alluding to is he’s a player with above-average size at his position, and if he’s able to execute certain things, I’m not going to limit a player to what he can or can’t do. Every game we have guys doing multiple roles and fitting within the offense tailored to their skill sets. So it’ll be cool to watch, and I can tell he is definitely attentive. He’s paying attention to everything I can tell you that much.”

McDaniel’s comments shouldn’t really be surprising. This system values tight ends that can block. It’s why George Kittle is so valuable in San Francisco. Durham Smythe has been playing that role in Miami and he can for sure block.

Funny enough, backup quarterback Mike White chimed in after hearing McDaniel’s comments.

Miami’s star wide receiver tandem also commented on the Claypool addition.

From Waddle:

“I told him, he looks like a freaking machine moving out there,” Waddle told reporters. “He’s got a big frame, that’s one thing that stands out. For his size, he is picking them up and putting them down, so I’m excited to see him play. I’m excited to see him work, work with him and all that type of stuff. We’re excited about him.”

From Tyreek Hill (this one is funnier)
