2023 NFL Season: Week 4 Overreactions

We are officially through Week 4 of the 2023 NFL season. We’re already roughly one-quarter of the way through the season! Now let’s dive into our overreactions from the week!

Trey Daubert

C.J. Stroud is going to end up being the QB1 in the 2023 NFL Draft.

I had Bryce Young in that spot forever but switched it after Stroud threw at the combine. Stroud’s performance at the Combine was one of the greatest I’ve ever seen. I think that switch is going to end up being the right call. Stroud looks fantastic and a bad Houston team keeps winning games. He’s a hell of a point guard and Houston should feel very happy with what they have.

The Bengals will not make the playoffs.

Joe Burrow’s calf injury is clearly way worse than we imagined, the guy is glued to one spot in the pocket and the Bengals’ play calling is severely limited. That Tennessee game was really hard to watch if you’re a Cincinnati fan. So far, the Bengals haven’t scored a first-half touchdown the entire year, and this is the second game this season that they haven’t scored a touchdown all game.

Now sitting at 1-3, their schedule is only going to get tougher. Because they won the division last year and went to their second straight AFC Championship game, they were rewarded with a first-place caliber schedule. Their upcoming games include the Cardinals, Seahawks, 49ers, and Bills. Later on, they’ll take on the Steelers twice, the Ravens, Browns, Chiefs, Vikings and Jags. If Burrow stays stagnant in the pocket, the Bengals are in trouble.

Daniel Jones’ time in New York is running short

The New York Giants suffered a pitiful 24-3 loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football. The blame for that loss deserves to go in several directions. That begins with quarterback Daniel Jones. Jones finished the game with 203 yards while going 27 for 34 on passing attempts. The issue is that he threw two interceptions and lost a fumble. In fairness to Jones, Saquon Barley was out and the offense line was porous. Still, Jones was massively underwhelming and he has clearly taken steps back from his career year in 2022.

It is hard to imagine the Giants continuing the Jones experiment. The only question is how they opt to move on from him. Jones signed a four-year extension in the offseason. Thankfully for New York, the contract does have a potential out after the second season. Regardless, it seems evident that the Giants move on from Jones in the near future.

Does Mac Jones make it past the season as New England’s starter?

Jones was benched for Bailey Zappe midway through Sunday’s 38-3 disastrous loss to the Dallas Cowboys after going 12-21 for 150 yards and three turnovers, including one pick-six. In lieu of injuries to rookie corner Christian Gonzalez and EDGE rusher Matthew Judon, the Patriots are not in any position to compete. At this point, I’m not sure if Jones will make it through the season as New England’s starter. He’s had an incredibly rough start to the season and it might not considerably improve anytime soon.
