Aaron Rodgers on Jets future: ‘We’re gonna be competitive here for a long time’

New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers has praised Zach Wilson all preseason, and now the newly-acquired veteran has high hopes for the team’s future. Rodgers believes Wilson can man the Jets for the next 15 or more years.

“I think we’re gonna be competitive here for a long time. I’d like to be able to play a few good years here and then hand it right back off to Zach (Wilson) and let him go for the next 15,” Rodgers told Otis Livingston of CBS Sports. “It’d be a really special 18-20-year run of great quarterback play.”

Before Rodgers came to New York, Wilson was seen as the future face of the Jets franchise, but only a few years in, that has changed. Wilson has struggled in his first two years with New York, posting 15 passing touchdowns and 18 interceptions in two seasons.

With Rodgers mentoring Wilson, the tides have turned in The Big Apple. The former BYU product has impressed the organization and his fellow quarterback.

“I hope this time for him is like a deep inhale and exhale and he can really take a breath and pause and deal with the disappointment of last year and the frustration, and then channel it,” Rodgers said, via PFT. “I feel like he has, just re-channel it as a positive and focus on the opportunity in front of him to learn with a guy who loves him and cares about him and wants him to be great and wants him to do incredible things every day and be better.”

“He has played really, really well in camp,” Rodgers said. “He’s made a number of great throws. He looks confident. His fundamentals are improving. He’s throwing the ball on time. He’s got all the intangibles. … I think he’ll look back years from now and be really thankful for this time to grow, to reset, to take a breath, and it’s gonna set him up for a nice long career in the league.

“I thought it was the best fit. … I’ve known Zach for the last couple of years. Loved him and felt like I could come and help him out as well.”

With the regular season looming, Rodgers and Wilson look to prove the doubters wrong and exceed expectations once again in New York.
