Pete Alonso admits he made ‘huge mistake’ tossing rookie’s first hit into crowd

Pete Alonso found himself in some rather hot water yesterday, and it wasn’t for just being a Met. During their game against the Cardinals, rookie Masyn Winn collected his first hit. A big moment for any kid that is usually capped off with the ball being returned to the player.

Well … Pete Alonso apparently had different things in mind as he proceeded to chuck the ball into the stands, which immediately made him the subject of internet backlash from people thinking he did it out of spite.

The truth is I wanted to come here and give Alonso the benefit of the doubt and believe he didn’t know. But the more I look at the video, the less I start to believe that. He looks over towards the dugout and motions over as if he knew the ball was of importance, before looking away and chucking it into the stands.

It really is probably nothing but just looked a little weird to me after watching the clip a few times.

It could all be a coincidence and Pete Alonso could have genuinely just been making a signal to the dugout. Nonetheless, Alonso had this to say about the whole ordeal.

“That was a huge mistake,” Alonso said. “Not a fun one to make. I feel awful about it.”

With that, Alonso continued to maintain that he genuinely didn’t know the significance of the ball and meant no harm intentions with the act. Saving him now is the fact that Masyn Winn did end up with the ball and even cleared the whole thing up after the game.

“He apologized on first (base), and when he got to second later, he apologized as well,” he said. “Complete accident. I thought it was quite funny. Especially after we got the ball back, I thought it was a little more funny.”

It’s clear that Winn doesn’t really hold it against Alonso at all. Safe to assume they are still on good terms. But of course, social media has to go crazy over something like this because why wouldn’t they?

I know Alonso is a bit of a weird and unhinged character, but I don’t think he would be cruel enough to do this. I honestly doubt any player would have it in them to intentionally toss a rookie’s first hit.

It would just open you up to a world of hate, as Pete Alonso can attest to, and really just wouldn’t benefit you in any way. Now while I would usually love to take any opportunity to hate on the Mets or their players, this just doesn’t seem like a reason to do that.

It’s a nothing situation where no real harm was done. Winn gets his ball and now a classic memory to go with it. As for Alonso, well, the Mets still suck and will for some time, so have fun with that I guess.
