Is Jake Ferguson the sleeper tight end in fantasy this year?

The tight end position in fantasy football can be a liability for anybody who doesn’t get to draft Travis Kelce. It’s overall just one of the weaker positions with a steep drop-off after the top 3 or so guys, which makes finding a diamond in the rough at the position all the more valuable. This is exactly what Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson can be if given the opportunity.

The Cowboys were delivered a blow when Dalton Schultz left for the Houston Texans. It immediately became a big position of weakness for them which they tried to address by drafting Luke Schoonmaker in the second round.

The consensus was that both Schoonmaker and Ferguson would battle it out for the No. 1 spot. But with Schoonmaker now returning from injury, Ferguson has been getting a majority of the reps, and the Cowboys seemingly like what they see.

This is notable because Dak Prescott loves his tight ends. This allowed Schultz to flourish while setting career highs in stats such as receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns.

It was clear that both Prescott and Schultz had a connection and that served as a safety blanket for Prescott. A philosophy that should play went for whoever the No. 1 tight ends end up being.

Now, there are some stipulations that could prevent Ferguson from being a true sleeper. The main one is the very presence of Schoonmaker. He is just now returning from injury and should see a chance to earn the top spot.

I mean the Cowboys drafted him with their second-round pick for a reason, which could be problematic because you never really want a backup tight end on your roster, no matter how dynamic the offense is.

But for Jake Ferguson, this could, unfortunately, be a possibility. As of right now Aug. 10, it seems he is the favorite to get the starting job. But there is still a long way to go before we are playing games, meaning a lot can change in terms of who ends up with what roster spots.

So in all, should you be rushing to draft Jake Ferguson in every single league you are in? No, definitely don’t do that. But I think this situation is worth monitoring because if Ferguson ends up being the starter, he may just be that diamond in the rough you need to win your league.
