Is the Jaylen Brown contract really that bad?

The NBA world stopped yesterday as the biggest contract in the history of the league was signed. Superstar guard Jaylen Brown signed a five-year extension worth $304 million with the Boston Celtics, but was it really worth it?

Will new CBA bring more parity in NBA?

Brown has been an uprising superstar for the past four years for the Boston Celtics, averaging over 20 points per game since 2019. But with recent playoff woes, Brown’s name has become in question for signing such a big contract. So, let’s take a look at the scenario at hand and truly see if $304 million is worth it for a player like Jaylen Brown.

With the new Collective Bargaining Agreement being active in the NBA, contracts are only starting to get bigger from here on out. As NBA revenue grows, the salary cap will increase, resulting in bigger deals for players. This may be difficult for NBA ownership to take power away from the players, but it will result in the NBA making it easier for any team to keep its star players like Brown.

In looking to the future, the Celtics needed to make this deal right now. Boston is already in championship aspiration mode, and it would be stupid if they let Brown walk. Even with his playoff struggles. Getting him for cheaper now is key because his co-star for the Boston Celtics Jayson Tatum is eligible for an even bigger contract next year.

At first, I didn’t want the Celtics to keep Brown so they could save more money and build around Tatum more. But that became extremely wrong. Before the CBA became set in stone, that seemed right with Brown’s playoff woes, but now it became very smart of Boston to sign the contract now. They’re at a point where there is no going back, as said before players will gain more power than before.

In doing so, Brown would command a big contract because he knows his worth. If Brad Stevens decided to trade Brown, it would destroy the Celtics chemistry and Jayson Tatum would most likely want out. Not to mention, Celtics fans would want to cut off Stevens’ head for that.

I have to admit; I was wrong about Brown’s deal at first, but with a little more thinking, it became more clear it was the right deal. Give him the money now when it’s only going to get more expensive. To answer the big question, no, the Jaylen Brown deal isn’t that bad.
