Rule Changes NFL Can Make To Protect RB Market
Running backs are crying up a storm because nobody wants to pay them. Instead of blaming Zeke Elliott and Le’Veon Bell for being bums, running backs have gone the pity party route instead. Running backs are probably still being paid too much. However, if the league does try to appease the players that play the position, here are some rule changes the NFL could consider.
1: Change The Franchise Tag
Jerry Walker and James Herrick had a good conversation about running backs today on the Daily Show. The tag number for running backs keeps going down. Scott had this idea in the Slack and it’s a pretty good one. What happens if you change the franchise tag? What if you made the tag for skill position players to lump running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends in the same bracket?
If a running back gets tagged, they’re certainly going to make more with the way the wide receiver market is exploding. Maybe teams are more hesitant to use the tag on running backs so this could easily backfire. More than anything, it might help the tight end market. Progress?
2: Increase Vet Minimum For RBs
This one might be the most attainable idea. 750,000 is the vet minimum number. What if you raised that number just for running backs? This way the players feel like everybody is making more. Teams should covet better players if you’re stuck paying the worst players at the position a hefty price. Then again, I have a feeling the greedy running backs at the top of the market don’t care enough, which is the entire problem. They want to make money to the point where it’s egregious for the team to pay. It’s why their argument still makes no sense.
3: Increase Rookie Contract Number For RBs
We know by now the way to go is to have constant turnover at the position by drafting superior options. Well, if the rookie contract numbers are higher for running backs, at least those guys are making more money during the years when they produce the most.
