PSG officially signs Marco Asensio, Milan Škriniar

Milan Škriniar and Marco Asensio were announced as new PSG players on Thursday.

The two both joined the club on free transfers. They are the first two signings of new manager Luis Enriques’s tenure at the club.

PSG is looking to rebuild ahead of next season after a crazy start to the 2023 summer transfer window. Lionel Messi departed for Inter Miami, Sergio Ramos is no longer at the club, Neymar might be heading out the door and Kylian Mbappé is looking to move on as well.

Škriniar and Asensio are the first two signings for what might be a wildly different-looking PSG side next season.

Marco Asensio

Marco Asensio has signed a three-year contract with PSG nine years with Real Madrid. During that time, the Spanish attacker made 285 appearances for Madrid, winning three La Liga titles, two Spanish Super Cups, three Champions Leagues, four FIFA Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups and a Copa del Rey.

Despite having a successful tenure with Real Madrid, Asensio decided to not renew his contract with the Spanish giants in order to secure first-team football. He flirted with moves to Aston Villa, Juventus and AC Milan, but ultimately decided that Paris was his preferred destination.

PSG is getting an elite attacking player who can be world-class on his day. Asensio has an absolute wand of a left foot that can score from distance, finish from close range or deliver a killer ball. He can beat players off of the dribble and is more than happy to go on long runs to create chances for himself and his teammates. He also has elite off-ball movement, showing a desire to always move into the right attacking spaces.

His only problem at Real Madrid is the incredible depth they have in attack. At just about any other team in the world, he would be a star.

If Luis Enrique can get the best out of Marco Asensio, PSG is going to have picked up a world-class attacker for free.

Milan Škriniar

Slovakian defender Milan Škriniar has signed a five-year contract with PSG, joining on a free transfer after six years with Inter Milan.

During his time with Inter, he made almost 250 appearances for the club and won one Serie A title, two Coppa Italia titles and two Supercoppa Italiana titles.

PSG is getting an imposing center-back who will immediately improve the club’s defensive line. He has many of the classic abilities that managers look for in center backs: strong, physical, good in the air and good in the tackle. He has a defense-first mentality, something that PSG needs with its existing plethora of attacking talent.

However, just because he is a strong defender does not mean he is also not good on the ball. Škriniar is as composed as they get when he is on the ball. He can pick out long passes, short passes, aerial passes and ground passes when called upon.

Getting Škriniar on a free transfer is a massive coup for PSG. After Ramos left the club this summer, Škriniar is set to immediately slot into PSG’s backline next season.

While Messi is gone and Mbappé may soon follow suit, PSG has no plans of fading into irrelevance. They are looking to finally win that elusive Champions League title and are mixing things up to do that.

Marco Asensio and Milan Škriniar are elite players who PSG was able to snap up for free. Expect to see more transfer news coming out of Paris during the next few weeks as PSG builds towards next season.
