Chris Godwin Defends Jameis Winston

Chris Godwin spent 3 years with Jameis Winston as his quarterback. Now Tom Brady is coming to Tampa Bay. Winston has been getting a ton of backlash for awhile given the number of interceptions he throws. If there is any consolation prize, Winston has a defender on the Bucs. Godwin spoke out to advocate for his former quarterback.

“I definitely think he got more of the blame than he deserved,” Bucs wide receiver Chris Godwin said in a recent interview with The Boardroom. “I think he’s a really, really talented quarterback. Obviously there are things that he does that you can’t teach, and there are plays that he made that just weren’t smart plays.

“But a lot of the mistakes and interceptions that he made, I would say half of them were because of a bad read on someone else’s part.”

“There have been times where receivers either ran the wrong route — I’ve been guilty of running a wrong route or not being in a spot where he thought I was going to be, and you get intercepted and you get a turnover,” Godwin told The Boardroom. “It’s not just him. I think people who are really entrenched in football understand that — that the quarterback gets a lot more of the blame than he deserves. Sometimes he gets a lot more credit than he deserves, too. But that’s just the nature for the position.”

It doesn’t what side of the coin you’re on, the public tends to praise or blame the quarterback for everything. It shouldn’t happen but it does. Winston made a lot of bad decisions in 2019. I’m not denying that. He also did a lot of things well. Godwin is right about one thing. A bunch of his turnovers can be attributed to a lot of things. One is the Bruce Arians scheme. Another one is fault of the receivers. No better example than the clip I included in the OJ Howard post.

Chris Godwin didn’t have much negative to say about Jameis Winston. Maybe that’s just him being a good guy but I believe him. I’m curious to see who rolls the dice on Winston in 2020. It wouldn’t be the worst idea for a team like the Steelers to have him sit behind Ben Roethlisberger and learn.
