NCAA Wrestling Championship Prediction: 125 LBS

It’s that time of the year again people! MARCH MATNESS! That’s right I said MATness, not madness. The college wrestling postseason is right around the corner and it has been one hell of a season so far. I will be doing a count down the next two weeks of my picks of which wrestler is going to take the crown at each of the 10 weight classes in Minneapolis, Minnesota March 19th – March 21st. I’m so excited people you have no idea. Let’s get it started with the little guys down at 125 LBs.

Chach’s Pick: Spencer Lee – Iowa JR

This pick is a no brainer and honestly a little boring in my opinion. Spencer Lee is one of the baddest young men not only in the country, but on the planet. In high school, Lee was a 3x Freestyle WORLD Champion at 50 kg, a 3x Pennsylvania AAA State Champion at 144-1 with his only loss coming in the State finals his senior year against my former teammate Austin Desanto. He was arguably the most sought after recruit in the history of high school wrestling and rightfully so. The kid is an absolute monster.

Now in his Junior year at Iowa, Lee is the returning 2x NCAA champion and has been nothing short of spectacular on his pursuit of his third title in 3 years. Arguably the front runner for the Hodge Trophy now that Zahid Valencia has been suspended Lee is undefeated this year sitting at 15-0 and has been absolutely dominant. He has scored bonus point victories in 14 of his 15 matches this year. The definition of dominance. Against wrestlers in the Big 10 this season, Spencer has outscored his opponents 57-1 and has a first period fall under his belt. He is ferocious, scores points, and doesn’t let you breath for a second. Absolute dominance. In my opinion, there isn’t anyone even in conversation right now that can upset this kid. When the lights are on and the chips are down Spencer Lee delivers time and time again. Two guys that do come to mind, however, are Oklahoma State Senior Nick Piccininni, who pinned Lee in the dual meet last year, and Princeton Sophomore Patrick Glory who in his own respect has shown that he can contend for a high place on the podium. Sadly neither of these great wrestlers can hold a candle to Spencer Lee’s dominance this season. The title is his to lose. Chach signing off!
