Is Tyrod Taylor The Next Chargers Starting Quarterback?

Who will the Los Angeles Chargers replace Philip Rivers with? We know that Rivers isn’t coming back, but the list of options to replace him seem endless. Tom Brady, Cam Newton, or maybe even somebody in the draft? What if the Chargers next starting quarterback is already on the roster? All indications suggest that Tyrod Taylor is a very real option to start next year year LA.

Anthony Lynn had this to say in a recent radio interview:

“Tyrod Taylor is a heck of a quarterback,” Lynn told AM 570 LA Sports. “We couldn’t have a better backup right now, and now he has an opportunity to maybe step up into a starting role. I’ve had Tyrod before, and I know what this young man brings to the table, in the passing game and the running game.

“One of the things he does very well is take care of the football. I believe every year he’s started in this league he’s been the No. 1 quarterback in taking care of the football. I believe more games are lost than won. So if we can just take care of the football and take it away, we’ll be OK.”

It’s not like any of this matters. The Chargers have a running back coach running the show. LA was just 2-9 in one score games last year despite having a loaded roster. That’s coaching. The Chargers won’t win anything with Lynn. If it were to matter, then I don’t hate this move.

The Chargers deserve credit for one thing. Signing Tyrod Taylor was very smart. The former Virginia Tech product will earn just $5 million for the upcoming season. It’s basically impossible to find a veteran starting quarterback for that kind of money. What’s more likely is the Chargers role with Taylor as a bridge to whoever they draft this year. It sounds like the Chargers really believe in Tyrod.

Taylor does one thing for the Chargers. He will take care of the football. In 2017 as a full time starter for Buffalo, Taylor turned the ball over just 6 occasions. Compare that to Philip Rivers this past year at 23. The Chargers should theoretically be better by cutting that number down.
