Cale Makar is a Superstar. It just sounds right, doesn’t it!?! The rookie Colorado Avalanche Defenseman has 37 points in 41 games and only trails Nathan “I’m not famous enough for TMZ” MacKinnon in points for the Av’s so far this season.

Cale Makar had a two point outing against the Detroit Red Wings as Colorado ran out 6-3 winners in their Martin Luther King day clash and moved the Avalanche to six points behind Central division leaders and reigning Stanley Cup Champions St. Louis Blues.

Makar’s shot through traffic from the point was tipped in by summer acquisition Nazem Kadri 1:02 into the second period to even up the game at a goal a piece after Tyler Bertuzzi had given the Red Wings a first period lead. Makar received the puck from Mikko Rantanen with 32 seconds remaining on the power play, took two strides to his left and let fly through a barrage of players. Kadri did the rest.

The Shaks Have A Decision To Make

But the reigning Hobey Baker Award winner was not done and less than two minutes later set up MacKinnon to give the Avalanche a 2-1 lead. Makar left Givani Smith for dead as he stopped the puck at the blue line pretended to go one way then took off the other. His pass found MacKinnon at the back post and despite fluffing his initial attempt he had enough time to make sure his second found the net.

That assist meant Makar equaled the franchise record for most points in a season by a rookie defenseman set by Bruce Bell in the 1984-85 season, back when the Avalanche were the Quebec Nordiques. The good news for Bruce is he will hold that record until the 1st of February thanks to the All Star Break. The bad news is he might not hold it for much longer than that.

Makar finished the game with 21:22 of ice time, the most of any Avalanche player, and a +3 rating.
