It has been rumored that the Orlando Magic are searching the trade market for scoring. This shouldn’t be much of a surprise as the Magic are averaging less than one point per possession. The Orlando Magic are also 3-7 to start the year. While the record can be scary, there is still time to win games for the Magic. However, if the Magic are having trouble scoring, that problem will last the entire season. So don’t think their record is why they’re interested in finding scoring, look at the points per possession stat.
As the title suggested, Demar DeRozan has been confirmed as a player that the Orlando Magic have expressed interest in. Kevin O’Conner of the Ringer reports:
“DeRozan can become a free agent in 2020 by declining his $27.7 million player option… The Spurs could always deal him sooner rather than let him walk for nothing. Multiple league sources say the Magic are scouring the trade market for scoring help and have already expressed interest in trading for DeRozan. It would surprise none of the front-office executives I’ve spoken with if the Spurs did move DeRozan.”
This seems to make sense for both sides. The Orland Magic get a pure scorer in DeRozan, as the Spurs get some assets back instead of losing Demar DeRozan for nothing if he chooses to walk. However, the Spurs are not known to make in-season trades, or really even any trades for that matter Yes, there was the infamous Kawhi Leonard trade where the Spurs got Demar DeRozan in the first place. Can you name any other Spurs trade? See there’s not that many of them.
It seems that the most logical package the Magic could send is Mo Bamba, Evan Fournier, and a 1st round pick for DeRozan. This makes the salaries match, and the Spurs get a young Center with plenty of potential. Salaries also match for Aaron Gordon and Mo Bamba, but it seems the Magic would be giving up too much for that.
I don’t see the Spurs signing DeRozan to an extension, but the Spurs may have to make a rare in-season trade to deal DeRozan. The trade deadline will probably be the best time for this, expect the Orlando Magic to be calling.
