Did you know MLB Opening Day was today? I’m sure you didn’t because Rob Manfred has no idea how to market his sport and the game was played at 6 am EST because they’re over in Japan to start the season. Rant aside, this is the last post to complete the Breakout Stars series for 2025. Here are the articles for the AL East, AL Central, AL West, NL East, and NL Central if you want to check those out. We’ll close with the NL West and feel free to send those comments in.
Arizona Diamondbacks: Jordan Lawler
It’s go time. Lawler was the 6th pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. All of the guys picked ahead of him are either knocking on the door or are already starting to emerge. Colton Cowser started his breakout campaign last year. Marcelo Mayer is regarded as one of the top prospects in baseball and is storming his way to the MLB team. Jack Leiter feels pretty can’t miss. The Diamondbacks need their contribution and need it now.
He had a brief 14-game MLB stint in 2023 where he was pretty terrible. Last year he didn’t crack the MLB lineup at all. Still a young player at 22 but needs to take that leap and is starting to run out of time to do so.
Colorado Rockies: Bradley Blalock
Look, it’s hard to find breakout candidates on the Rockies when the entire ownership group doesn’t care. Blalock is a random reliever that you may want to keep an eye on. I’ll leave it at that. Do the Rockies deserve any more of my time? I’ve said this many times but if Colorado was smart, they would put together a five-man rotation of all knuckleballers and see what happens. Convince me that’s not better than what they’re doing now.
Los Angeles Dodgers: Justin Wrobleski
Former 11th round pick who felt like he was rushed to the Majors a year too soon with all the injuries the Dodgers had in the rotation. A 5.70 ERA in eight outings isn’t exactly inspiring confidence but I think you will see more in the tank to come. He’s a funky lefty that may get moved to the pen to eat up long innings role. I could see him emerging as a valuable arm in some way shape or form.
San Diego Padres: Tirso Ornelas
The Padres young talent pool is shrinking drastically. AJ Preller loves doing that thing where he overhauls his entire team to get nowhere. Guy can’t help himself. The Mexican outfielder hit .297 with 23 homers in the minors last year. As a lefty bat who can kinda hit for power, I’d imagine you’re going to see him this year. Already 25 so what you see this year might be what you get. We’ll see.
San Francisco Giants: Marco Luciano
I’m a believer. It feels like he’s way too toolsy to outright fail. Hard to find infielders with real power potential. This will be my answer next year too until it’s clear it’s just not going to happen.
