The college football playoff format stinks and this game was the epitome of that. People fail to realize that this is not college basketball. If you think all of these teams are playing the same sport, you played yourself big time. There’s nothing we can do about the fact that people are stupid, unfortunately. We can only roll with the cards we’re deal in terms of the 2025 NFL Draft.
The for 2025 NFL Draft Stock Report series, you’re going to get a heavy dosage of truth serum with the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl. Nothing I saw in this game was super surprising but I’m glad we got this game because it confirmed a lot of thoughts I previously had going in. Let’s get to all of the notes you need to know on Boise State and Penn State!
Boise State
When I say you have to tier things in your mind, this is a perfect example of just that. Ashton Jeanty sure put up some big numbers in A ball. Hit like .400 with 60 homers in A-Ball. Raise the level of comp, what happens? I’m not banging on the guy. I’ve written positive reviews on Jeanty. He clearly has some incredible contact balance. Has some rare traits. Are we sure the guy belongs in the Hall of Fame? Brutal fumble in the first quarter. Fumbled again in the second quarter that his team was lucky to fall on.
Finished the game with 30 carries for 104 yards at a 3.5 YPC clip. At the end of the day, the fat guys up front always matter most. This is what happens when the level of comp goes up. Speed of the game increases. Fumbles start happening. Home run runs start decreasing.
I don’t hate the guy. Never have but I hope people are more realistic about what’s transpiring here. Good player. I’m also not sure he’s the best running back in the game, let alone for the draft. I felt this way before the game and feel it now after. The unfortunate part is I wish there was a separate G5 playoff so that he would continue to rack up fairy tale numbers and then get heart broken when he’s not god at the NFL level. I think that would have been better but at least people see some light now.
Maddux Madsen is horrible. Three egregious picks in this. I’m not going to dive into it too deep. Was never an NFL guy but I more so want to talk about the fact that Malachi Nelson couldn’t beat this guy out. That right there tells a lot.
The Boise State pass rush actually isn’t terrible all things considered. I thought their best rusher was Jayden Virgin Morgan. He was really nowhere to be found. They locked him up pretty well. It was Ahmed Hassanein who had a sack and three TFLs. Boise had three more sacks on top of that. Probably would have been eliminated if Penn State had better play calling but maybe worth a look in the deep territory.
Penn State
Penn State is a top unit at stopping the run coming into the game and it showed. Abdul Carter is a freak but they have capable guys beyond just him in the front. That front is real. All you have to do is watch the first blocked field goal attempt. Those guys create leverage and push the line. It’s hard for Boise’s line to handle those guys.
Had no answer for Abdul Carter. There’s nothing else for me to say. Pencil him in for the top five. He left the game early too but when he’s out there… good hell he’s good, man. He also left the game early with what looked like a shoulder injury. Let’s hope he’s okay for the next round.
It’s Dani Dennis-Sutton who really is starting to grow on me. Maybe Carter isn’t doing all of this alone. Six tackles, a sack, and 2.5 TFLs in this one for DDS. 6-foot-5, 272, and a junior but he’s really taking strides forward. Did a lot of damage without Carter on the field too. I think we’re going to have to examine this one further because he’s really starting to pop off down the stretch here.
Kalen King didn’t make it but Kobe King sure looks like he has a shot to do so at linebacker. Moves well with plus range. Not a bad tackler either. Looks like he can play in a lot of scenarios too. Can rush. Can drop. Might have something here.
Ashton Jeanty might be the third best running back in this game. I think he’s probably the second best but we can’t undersell this Kaytron Allen. He’s legit and has power. You can run him in a lot of different ways and he can scoot once he’s got a full head of steam. I don’t think it’s a if he’s an NFL player. That’s an NFL player. If he wasn’t legit, he wouldn’t start over Nick Singleton, which is an accomplishment in itself. He’s a total hammer that you can tell wears on the opposition as the game goes.
It was Nick Singleton who hit the home run ball. That guy is just the complete package. Big, fast, physical, can catch. He’s exactly what you want for the modern era. That guy just takes your breath away. He’s closer to Saquon Barkley than anyone wants to admit. Absolute stud in every way. Nothing that I haven’t been saying for weeks now though.
By the way, Penn State should have won this game by more. I have no idea why this was the case but Allen averaged 7.9 yards per carry while Singleton was at 7.3 and they kept trying to throw the ball. It never made a lick of sense but I guess that’s Penn State for you.
I can’t wait to see how high Tyler Warren goes in the draft. Can’t wait because I already know how you people operate and it’s going to be way too high. Not that I’m not impressed but what he’s doing. Got right after it again catching a nice touchdown to start the game in the corner. Has height and isn’t a clunky mess moving around. Catches another one in the third where he high points the ball beautifully.
Six catches for 63 yards and two scores. The last one was sexy AF. He’s certainly improved his stock but I’m scared that people have now lost their minds and he’s going to go way too high. We’ll see on that though.
Drew Allar balled out. Played fantastic. Context will be needed though. This is like watching an MLB team play an A ball team. It’s just not really the same sport. Putting up stats in the Mountain West is cute but against big boys like this, you just have no chance. Boise has given up big plays all year even against the cupcakes too.
With that said, dude made some throws. Is that because they didn’t speed him out and the talent shows when he’s on schedule? OR did he just have a great game? Both can be true because there were plenty of times this year he didn’t hit those open throws regardless.
Still too inaccurate. Still too many times he’s slow to react. Still too many times he can make a play with his legs and doesn’t. Still has talent and can make big boy throws. You get the good version of him, Penn State can win the whole thing. He’s coming back next year and if we get another few leaps, don’t discredit him going high in the 2026 draft.
