VSM is back with MLB draft profiles. Jack Sabin and I will bring you the list of talented college and high school athletes whose names will be called on July 14-16. Let’s start it off with one of the potential first overall picks in 3B/OF Charlie Condon.
Scouting grades: Hit: 60 / Power: 70 / Run: 40 / Arm: 55 / Field: 50 / Overall: 65
This kid’s size and hitting ability are enough to get excited over. In two seasons with Georgia, he hit .414/.523/.921 with 60 home runs and 142 RBIs. His 6’6″ frame gives him extremely raw power to all parts of the field.
His exit velocities are among the top. Condon reached into the 110-115mph range with ease. He carries a lot of bat speed paired with quick hands, leading to a typical barrel exploding through the zone.
Because of his size and long arms, the swing can get a bit long sometimes. There are some questions about his ability to drive pitches outside the zone, but he’s done well at keeping his swing compact and controlling the zone.
Condon will be a solid hitter, the 40-homer upside is there, and the batting average/OPS should be high throughout his career.
While the offense is more solidified, there have been questions surrounding Condon’s defense. He’s a below-average runner, but his athleticism and long strides are enough to keep up. Condon’s arm also makes up for the speed, which has kept him at third base and the outfield.
While he probably isn’t fast enough for centerfield, a future in the corner outfield or at third base is still in the cards. Condon has also spent time at first base, which could still be in play with his height, arm, and athleticism.
Condon will either go #1 or #2, and there have been comps of Kris Bryant and Nick Castellanos made. Whoever drafts him will be getting an exceptional hitter with great athleticism.
