*Link To ESPN’s 2024-25 Fantasy Hockey Rankings/Projections:
Devon Toews (Colorado Avalanche) D28, 129th overall
Not sure what people are missing here. Plays for Colorado. Plays top pair with Cale Makar. Toews has averaged 42 assists each season over the last three years. If Makar ever misses time, he is an elite option. At pick 129, I can do way worse.
Brent Burns (Carolina Hurricanes) D29, 131st overall
This is the lowest Burns has been ranked since I’ve been doing this. He probably has another year left in the tank. As long as you handcuff him with Gostisbehere, there shouldn’t be a ton to worry about. Burns is built different. Still skates a ton of minutes, is offensive-minded, and plays for a good Carolina team. At this price, I’ll buy.
Drew Doughty (Los Angeles Kings) D30, 132nd overall
Soooooo I recorded the video prior to this.
Hockey fans know what Doughty brings to the table. At this spot (after the injury) it’s probably too high. If you’re stuck with him, don’t panic and just pick up Brandt Clarke.
Charlie McAvoy (Boston Bruins) D31, 134th overall
Awesome real life player and someone who will be steady for your lineup. Just think there is way more offense in the tank that we haven’t seen yet. Elias Lindholm gives the Bruins a number one center again. Pastrnak still does Pastrnak things. McAvoy is now the established PP1 guy and only had 12 PP points last year. Had 47 points last year but was over 50 each of the last two years prior. Think he can get to 60 and heading into age 26, he’s a major buy at this price.
Seth Jones (Chicago Blackhawks) D32, 136th overall
You know my rule. Get the powerplay quarterbacks. I’m not sure high on Seth Jones the actual player but he’s a value at this price. The Blackhawks will be better as Connor Bedard continues to develop. They made a ton of offseason additions too. It’s a team filled with young D and Jones is the catalyst to this group. He’s a buy for that reason alone.
Vince Dunn (Seattle Kraken) D35, 154th overall
Why are we so quick to give up on Vince Dunn? Why exactly should he lose his job to Brandon Montour? Dunn led the team in +/- last year and had 46 points in 59 games last year. The year before that, Dunn had 64 points in 81 games. I would argue he’s their best player. This Montour thing is a joke and there is no reason he should be ranked this many spots higher than Dunn.
Noah Hanifin (Vegas Golden Knights) D37, 162nd overall
Not sure who is paying attention but we saw how this thing is going to look at the end of last year. Hanifin has taken over the PP job. It’s his and he played so damn well after coming over after the trade. His stock is only going up and he looks really happy in Vegas. Had 12 points in 19 games with the VGK last year on top of five points in seven games during the playoffs. This will be a career best season for Hanny. That’s coming. It’s about as stone cold of a lock as it gets.
Sean Durzi (Utah Hockey) D39, 168th overall
Same thing with Vince Dunn. Sean Durzi did a damn good job last year manning the top spot on the now Utah PP. Mikhail Sergachev is obviously a bigger threat than Montour. Then again, Sergachev is coming off a serious injury and Tampa Bay had to be worry about it. Why trade him otherwise?
I talked about this already in an old post but I wouldn’t be so sure about just quitting on Durzi. The good news is he’s so cheap that I can take the flier and not even feel guilty about it if things do go south. Career high 41 points last year and the rest of the team is young/getting better. At this price, why not?
Jakob Chychrun (Washington Capitals) D42, 181st overall
So much upside here. John Carlson is getting older and has been hurt a bunch in the past. Chychrun scored 14 goals last year in a dysfunctional situation. I don’t think it’s impossible he steals the top job by the end of the season. Had 41 points last year and if everything goes right, he could get closer to 70. This Caps team isn’t bad and he’s skill enough offensively to make it happen.
Gustav Forsling (Florida Panthers) D45, 196th overall
Someone has to take the top job in Florida. Will it be Forsling? Will it be Ekblad? Maybe it’s one of these buyout guys they added (Boqvist / Schmidt). Forsling is ready for this job and has been a steady climber for years. Had a +56 rating last year and is becoming a very good real life player. On this Florida team at this price? Take the shot.
Filip Hronek (Vancouver Canucks) D48, 213th overall
Locked into the secondary job with Vancouver. Was awesome last year posting 48 points. It looks like Rick Tocchet fixed the Canucks so no reason why anything would change. Plays on the top pair with Quinn Highes. At this price, he’s a perfect guy to take at the end of your draft.
Mattias Ekholm (Edmonton Oilers) D51, 225th overall
Career high 45 points. He’s not an offensive player but the blocked shots will be there and he’s going to luck his way into assists. It’s Edmonton. McDavid and Draisaitl are so good that he will pick up assists just being on the ice playing heavy minutes. Skating five-on-five with Evan Bouchard and his wicked shot helps too.
Shea Theodore (Vegas Golden Knights) D52, 226th overall
This is just flat out disrespectful. Had 42 points in 47 games last year. He’s in a contract year and Vegas is switching up the D core. Last year he was playing with Brayden McNabb on his off side. Now he’s on his strong side skating with Alex Pietrangelo. He’s free and he shouldn’t be. Hell 70 points could be there. There is no question about the talent. Just have to keep the guy healthy.
Thomas Chabot (Ottawa Senators) D62, 254th overall
Still a horse in terms of ice time. Has been over 26 minutes per game during certain stretches of his career. Chychrun is gone, which means he’s not fighting for that spot anymore. It’s back to Chabot and Sanderson. One the ice too much to not pick up stats. He also is only this cheap because he’s really consistent at missing time. If he can somehow stay healthy, this is a bargain.
Luke Hughes (New Jersey Devils) D63, 255th overall
47 points in his first season as a rookie. Will miss the start of the year with injury but it’s only a matter of time before he starts looking more like Quinn Hughes. Dougie Hamilton was hurt all of last year. On this Devils team, offense should be there. No brainer to take a shot here at this price.
Aaron Ekblad (Florida Panthers) D74, 286th
What I said in the Forsling section applies here.
Owen Power (Buffalo Sabres) D75, 288th overall
Former number one overall pick. The guy has to figure it out at some point, right? Heading into age 24 season. It’s really a Sabres conversation. They can’t suck forever? Too many young guys. Maybe this is the year of Power. One of these young Sabres has to take a step forward and it very well could be Power.
Pavel Mintyukov (Anaheim Ducks) D76, 294th overall
Had a very good showing as a rookie last year. Notched 28 points in 63 games last year and looks like a future PP specialist. Cam Fowler could also be dealt at the deadline. The Ducks have been bad but they’re collecting young talent that’s on the rise. A breakout season could be on the way.
Shayne Gostisbehere (Carolina Hurricanes) D84, Outside Top 300
Say whatever you want about Ghost. Guy knows how to move the puck. If you take Burns, get your handcuff here. Ghost could steal this PP job. It’s a matter of if he can produce beyond it. Being in Carolina helps that part.
JJ Moser (Tampa Bay Lightning) D91, Outside Top 300
Sneaky, sneaky. Sergachev is gone. Victor Hedman can only do so much. What if Moser slides his way into an important role? We know Ryan McDonagh is the stay at home guy. On this Lightning team? Potential is there.
Brandt Clarke (Los Angeles Kings) D134, Outside Top 300
Young player with a stupid amount of talent. Now Doughty is hurt and this is his job. If you need D, this is a major buy.
Simon Nemec (New Jersey Devils) D141, Outside Top 300
Former high draft pick. Worth a dart throw.
Olen Zellweger (Anaheim Ducks) D142, Outside Top 300
If the Ducks take a leap, this could be the answer.
Simon Edvinsson (Detroit Red Wings) D143, Outside Top 300
Seider getting a better partner that’s not Chiarot?
Philip Broberg (St. Louis Blues) D148, Outside Top 300
Who do the Blues have and why can’t it be Broberg?
