We are now officially past the halfway point of the 2023 NFL season. Each week, we go over at least three fantasy football breakout candidates who could … you know, break out … in the upcoming week! Before we dive into which three players could break out this week, let’s see how we did in Week 9!
Not bad, but something we can improve upon! Let’s examine who our Week 9 fantasy football breakout candidates are across the NFL!
Despite suffering a back injury last week, Bengals wideout Ja’Marr Chase is expected to suit up. Tee Higgins (hamstring) will be inactive, thus Smith and Tyler Boyd are the likely candidates to supplement in target share, among others. It might not matter if Chase logs 50-to-75 percent of the targets, though depending on his health, don’t be surprised if Smith breaks out. He’s been more featured in the offense, logging eight targets, seven receptions and 51 receiving yards over the last two weeks–and could be prime for a breakout performance against a mediocre Houston secondary.
Robinson is due, right … right?!?!?! He has not had more than 13 touches since Week 6 and has not finished higher than RB15 since Week 4. I am unsure if I should have enough faith in Arthur Smith to break that trend in Week 10 against Arizona, but the Cardinals offer a favorable matchup for the run-heavy Falcons. They place amongst the bottom-10 teams leaguewide in rushing EPA/play allowed while placing in the bottom half in yards per carry allowed. Let Bijan cook, Arthur!
It’s been a roller coaster of a season for Geno Smith, who has thrown four touchdowns to just six interceptions over the last four weeks against the Bengals, Cardinals, Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Ravens, respectively. The Seahawks return home to face the Washington Commanders in Week 10; Washington is No. 30 in EPA/play allowed and in EPA/dropback allowed this season, so this is a favorable matchup for Seattle with Tyler Lockett, D.K. Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba at his disposal. If there’s any week for Smith to get back on track, it’s this one. He has not finished above a QB15 since Week 2. He’s due.
