The final day of the 2022 Reese’s Senior Bowl is in the books. The media got banned because we know why. The practice is indoors so once again we’re doing the best we can with the ESPN broadcast. Except for this time, we don’t even get Kam on the sidelines.
Let’s get right to it. Who stood out for better or worse on the final day of the 2022 Reese’s Senior Bowl practice by the National Team.
Quarterbacks:
Kenny Pickett didn’t have the best day yesterday in the rain. Something that maybe should be factored in given the news. With the practice moved indoors, I thought Pickett had a solid B level day. Made some really good throws in the red area. Not a rocket but looks in control. Throws a good ball. Placement not always perfect. Far from perfect in general. Better than he gets credit for type athlete.
You love the fact that Pickett has so many starts under his belt. It’s something that can’t be undersold. But you can tell the guy gets it. Drives off the back foot. Anticipates throws. Knows pre snap. Good eye discipline. I do like him. Love is a strong word.
I want to love Carson Strong, but god I’m so disappointed. It’s a wide range, man. Just in general he looks frustrated and overwhelmed. Feels like he’s slow getting lined up. Is slow in general. Can’t really move. Slow feet and bad overall accuracy. Never really makes good throws unless he can float it and drop something in a bucket. Otherwise, he’s awful. Has zip but what good is it if he doesn’t bring much to the table?
Desmond Ridder is just worthless. Dirts everything. Not a real quarterback. Want no part.
Running Backs:
Don’t love this Jerome Ford. He’s fine but we saw today why he’s limited. No creativeness in the passing game. Totally blanket by a linebacker in coverage and that should never happen. He’s okay as a pure runner but I need more.
Rachaad White still looks like the only real running back in the group. He’s not great. The Backs in this group are just awful.
Wide Receivers:
This Christian Watson has some giddy up. Looks good going deep. Has made some plays. Probably worth a longer look. Even has some height. Just not sure he’s a real receiver in terms of having a full route tree.
Romeo Doubs can catch. I’m not sure about his movement skills but he’s there and reliable. He beat the Pitt DB on a touchdown in the red area.
Khalil Shakir looked good. I’m not sure he’s good but thrived in this setting. Winning on those easy slant routes in the red area. Short and shifty. Didn’t catch my eye before. Not sure he even did but credit where credit is due.
Tight Ends:
I may have been a little harsh to this Trey McBride. Not a first rounder but he’s got a Hunter Renfrow tight end vibe to him. Guy makes plays. Guy gets open. Guy can catch when you don’t think he will. Hard eval. What’s the best case here? If the line is Austin Hooper, I’m not sure if he’s better or worse. I just don’t see major through the roof upside.
Like I said, I’m partially in. You’re not getting Gronk or even Pat Freiermuth. He’s not that big and dominant of a target. But I do think he can play.
Cole Turner is officially in the mix. He’s a different kind of cat. Not a blocker but gets in the way. 6-foot-6, can high point, appears to be a little slim, but crafty and has that short area quickness. Monster catch radius.
Offensive Line:
I don’t love this Trevor Penning. I sort of get the intrigue but he’s not all that. In fact, he might stink. Slow feet. Doesn’t look great on the back pedal. He’s got a punch and is willing to get nasty. But in terms of pure strength and movement skills, not that special. Tyreke Smith blew right past him like he wasn’t there. Has heart but there is a lot of work to do here and you better be right given his stock right now.
If you’re going to be Ritchie Incognito, better be able to back it up. Not sure he’s that gifted.
Credit to Zion Johnson. Not only did he play well but this guy is still on the field working on center reps. Everyone else is gone or doing interviews. He’s there getting more work in. Stuffed UConn on a rep. Love his lower half. I like this due.
The Central Michigan guy Luke Goedeke jumps off the screen because of how bad he is. Dude is totally unplayable and undraftable. Jumpy. Weak at point of attack. Not quick. Looks like a long snapper. Tries to time every snap because otherwise, he’s outmanned and outgunned. Can’t play.
Daniel Faalele had a better day. Just screams guard. Can move bodies in the run game. Hardest evaluation at the practices.
Not sure this UT-Chat center is even good but he fights. Got overpowered by Travis Jones. Next rep beats him. Better in a zone scheme where he can work upfield.
Defensive Line:
Haskell Garrett got hurt. Really unfortunate cause he was building momentum.
Perrion Winfrey keeps making money. The motor continues to stand out. Super quick. Plays with good leverage for 6-foot-4. Looks like the Kool-Aid man bouncing through walls.
Logan Hall. Just keep an eye out. So damn long and oddly doesn’t lose pad level. “Could” be a real gem.
Linebackers:
Chad Muma just has no coverage ability. Just appears to be a limited athlete and doesn’t play like his hair is on fire like the guy the Bengals drafted Logan Wilson. Probably out.
Jesse Luketa is just way better than his teammate Arnold Ebiketie. One guy has twitch. One guy has one move and butts his head against the wall if he fails. You can figure out who is who.
Defensive Backs:
Truthfully, I don’t know what’s really going on here. A lot of replacements being filtered in. Coby Bryant looks good but I don’t have a ton. Also, not sure about this Jalen Pitre. Looks better coming down hill but he’s small. Don’t think his coverage skills are great. You can see why people like him but not sure he translates well and the Tyrann Mathieu comp is disrespectful.
