I have to admit, trying to come up with this list last week was a bit of a stretch. The slate felt very top-heavy, making it hard to find those depth games to fill the list. This week, I had a preliminary list of 11 games to choose from that I would want to watch, so, all in all, Week 4 of the college football season is set up to be a great one. We have ranked conference games, teams facing their toughest challenges yet and a feel-good story cracks the top games this week. With that being said, let’s dive into the college football best games of the week!
Honorable Mention: Maryland at No. 4 Michigan, Notre Dame at UNC, No. 7 USC at Oregon State
Come on, you know we couldn’t start our list of the best games of the week in college football without Appalachian State, right? In case you were living under a rock last weekend, App State hosted College Gameday (didn’t broadcast the game on their network, but whatever) and it ended with a Hail Mary for a Mountaineers win. The story here is that App State actually is a pretty decent team. Their Week 1 matchup against UNC was arguably the game of the year so far, and upsetting Texas A&M was huge as well. They have a balanced offense that loves to spread it around. This is a fun team to watch this year.
The unstoppable force meets the immovable object. The Ohio State Buckeyes hold the No. 1 offense in the country, averaging a staggering 565 yards per game and 20 touchdowns through three weeks! You’d think, who can stop this? Well, Wisconsin will give them a run for their money. The Badgers are the 12th-ranked defense in the country, allowing 246 yards per game and just three total touchdowns in 2022. History has not been kind to the Badgers, however, as since 2010 they are 0-8 against the Buckeyes. Will that change Saturday?
Coming in at No. 3 in our best games of the week for college football, this matchup is centered around one player: Devon Achane. Achane is going from the most underrated back in the country to one of the best. He is currently the only player in the country to record a rushing, passing and kickoff return TD. Arkansas has looked solid to start the year, and if they can contain Achane and pick up a huge road win, this would go a long way towards their College Football Playoff hopes.
A massive QB showdown takes the No. 2 spot of our college football best games of the week. I was very high on Florida QB Anthony Richardson to start the year, and if he wants to turn the narrative around and fix this season, it has to take place on the road against a tough Volunteers team. Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker is also looking to drive his stock up by picking up a high-profile win against a ranked team. Could Tennessee actually be back?
I mentioned before the season started in our bold predictions post that Clemson would not win the ACC and that Wake Forest would. We have our test right here. Clemson has a lot of question marks, especially under center. DJ Uiagalelei’s job might be in jeopardy based off how freshman Cade Klubnik ended the season opener against Georgia Tech. If Uiagalelei struggles early, the Tigers might make a move to Klubnik. Wake Forest has looked solid this year, and if they have any hopes of making a run at an ACC crown this year, it MUST start with a massive home win against the Tigers.
