2021 Met Gala Review

It’s been one of the most prestigious and highly sought-after events in fashion since 1948. The Met Gala is an annual event held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Normally held on the first Monday of May, COVID-19 pushed this year’s back to September.

The theme this year was ‘In America: A Lexicon of Fashion’. In no particular order, let’s judge some celebrities with questionable taste, shall we?

Kim Petras- Collin Strada

What the fuck is this? On the yay or neigh scale, I’m going to have to go with neigh. I suppose…maybe…if you squint your eyes…and tilt your head…it might…could perhaps be a western theme???? I still hate it.

Kendall Jenner- Givenchy

Everyone seems to have an opinion on the Kardashian-Jenners but all that aside, this is a wonderful piece. It’s an homage to Audrey Hepburn’s look in the classic film ‘My Fair Lady’. Though Hepburn was British, she was an American icon who had a large influence on the American film industry.

Simone Biles- Area in collaboration with Athleta

Fresh off the Tokyo Olympics, Simone Biles wore an 88-pound, 3-in-1 sparkly gown to this year’s Gala. The star pattern on her bodysuit is actually the Athleta logo. The skirt and dress pieces were inspired by 1920’s showgirls. The beads and the crystals add lots of intricate detail. This look isn’t for everyone but in an interview with Vogue, Simone stated that it made her feel “beautiful and empowered”

Kim Kardashian-Balenciaga

What is this? I wish I had an answer. I’ve seen people on Twitter saying it symbolizes her past self. Kim pre-Kanye. I’ve seen people saying it’s a Donda promotion. But why would she be promoting her now ex-husbands new album?

This is very out of the ordinary for Kim. She is always going all-in for the Met Gala and having the 2020 Gala canceled, you’d think this would be no exception. Whatever this look may or may not symbolize, it is very out of character for her.

I think it’s a homage to the classic Disney film Peter Pan…and she is…The Shadow.

Pete Davidson- Thom Browne

Pete sported a lovely Thom Browne slip dress with a white blazer and sunglasses on Monday night. “I’m terrified!” he shouted at a reporter as he walked by. Pete may have been scared to death but he posed like a Met pro despite this being his first Gala. He spoke with Keke Palmer with Vogue later on in the evening “If you’re gonna wear a dress, what better way or place to do it than the Met, you know?… I’m really excited and really stoked that they thought I could pull this off, which is hilarious.”

Lorde- Bode

The Kiwi princess reminded us all that she is, in fact, a princess with this look. After the release of her third studio album, Solar Power, Lorde has re-emerged into the public eye after being virtually radio silent for several years.

Kaia Gerber- Oscar de la Renta

This beautiful black gown was inspired by Bianca Jagger’s look from the 1981 Met Gala. The ivy vines around the top of the strapless dress are beautiful. To top off the look, Geber wore very Jagger-esque waves parted to the side.

Lil Nas X- Versace

Looking as regal as ever in all three of his looks for the evening, Lil Nas X wore a custom Versace. When he first arrived on the carpet, he was wearing a floor-length golden robe. He removed the robe to reveal a golden suit of armor which could not have been comfortable but…it’s The Met…beauty is pain. He later peeled off the armor to reveal his final look, a gold embellished black bodysuit. This was Nas’ first Gala and he truly had the time of his life. He crammed as many celebrity selfies into the night as he possibly could. I think Lil Nas X is going to become one that we look forward to seeing at the Met every year.

Rihanna- Balenciaga

As a former co-chair of the event, Rihanna knows how to make a show-stopping appearance at the Met Gala. And although this year’s look was not the glamour we’re used to seeing from the queen herself, it did not disappoint. She appeared as the last guest on the carpet in a custom Balenciaga overcoat and matching hat. It was 80 degrees in New York yesterday, I can’t imagine she was comfortable. But, as previously stated, beauty is pain.

Billie Eilish- Oscar de la Renta

I love this dress with all my heart. This beautiful look designed by the house of Oscar de la Renta is very obviously inspired by Marylin Monroe. The story behind it is quite interesting. Oscar de la Renta has been a large distributor of luxury furs. Billie Eilish is a vegan and a very big animal rights activist. Doesn’t quite add up, does it? WRONG. The company and its creative directors agreed to go completely fur-free. She stated in an Instagram post that she was “beyond thrilled” the team heard her on the issue and “have now made a change that makes an impact for the greater good, not only for animals but also for our planet and environment too.”
