12 Days of Prospects: Day 11, Druw Jones

Outfielder Druw Jones has a lot of things going well for him. First off, his dad is 10-time Gold Glove winner Andruw Jones. He was the second overall pick in the 2022 MLB draft, and he’s already the 11th-best prospect in baseball. Safe to say the future is beyond bright for the kid.

The Numbers:

Scouting grades on 20-80 scale:

  • Hit: 55
  • Power: 60
  • Run: 70
  • Arm: 65
  • Field: 70
  • Overall: 60

Jones suffered a shoulder injury shortly after being drafted, putting an end to his 2022 season before it even began. He led his high school team to an undefeated 35-0 record before he was drafted, though. Jones hit a whopping .570 batting average in his final high school season and smashed 13 home runs. His junior year was no different, as he batted .445 with 16 home runs and a 1.494 OPS.

The Potential:

Like his dad, Jones is already a five-tool player with incredible defense. He’s taller and leaner than his dad was, allowing him to explode with his quickness better.

His swing is of course a work in progress despite it looking pretty from afar. The mechanics are there, Jones just needs to do damage against quality, professional pitching. His bat speed has been no issue either, allowing him to drive opposite field gap hits which will turn into more power.

Meanwhile, his elite speed not only helps the defensive side but helps Jones on the base-paths. He’s not only going to be a stolen base threat, but Jones is capable of beating out ground balls on the infield for base hits with ease.

Being the best defender in the Draft already puts him well ahead of schedule, and for a 19-year-old out of high school, he’s making his own name for himself.

The Verdict:

Jones is going to have a similar, if not better, career than his dad. His defense will win him multiple Gold Gloves, and his speed will earn him 30-plus stolen bases and 20-30-plus home runs a year. The shoulder injury of course delays his chance to officially begin in the organization, but there’s no doubt with the Diamondbacks that he’s their guy. Along with Corbin Carroll and Alek Thomas, the Diamondbacks are going to have a very good outfield.
