12 Days of Prospects: Day 10, Jackson Chourio
We’ve reached the No. 10 best prospect in MLB, and he’s an 18-year-old outfielder from the Milwaukee Brewers. Jackson Chourio has only been with the organization for two years but has already made enormous progress as he’s the Brewers’ No. 1 prospect.
The Numbers
Scouting grades on 20-80 scale:
- Hit: 55
- Power: 60
- Run: 70
- Arm: 45
- Field: 60
- Overall: 60
In 2022, Chourio worked his way from Low-A to Double-A. He only played in six Double-A games, batting .087. In a larger sample size, Chourio played 62 games in Low-A and batted .324 with 23 doubles.
Between the three affiliates in 2022, Chourio batted .288/.342/.538 with 30 doubles, 20 home runs, 75 RBIs and 16 stolen bases. The contact numbers have been extremely advanced for his age and is strong at getting on base.
The Potential:
Chourio is one of the toolsiest players you’ll see in the minor leagues. The bat speed is what makes his contact numbers so great, and it’s also increasing his home run totals. So far, he’s struggled with making contact on breaking pitches, but saw significant improvement in 2022. Chourio is expected to be a 20-25 homer hitter with a high batting average and OBP.
His speed is electric and is the reason he went from shortstop to the outfield so quickly. With speed comes to the range to play great defense which he’s already been proven to do. An excellent example of a 5-tool player, and has received comparisons to Ronald Acuna Jr.
The Verdict:
Chourio is only 18 years old and has the clear tools to become an offensive and defensive superstar. The Brewers have a large number of outfield prospects, including Sal Frelick, Joey Wiermer, and Garrett Mitchell. Alongside Chourio, those four all have around the same potential of becoming the next-best outfield trio in Milwaukee.
His ETA is currently set for 2024, and the Brewers’ 1-7 prospects all have an ETA of 2023-24, putting Chourio right in the mix of their next core.
