Jacob deGrom has outperformed his contract in a big way. deGrom won the Cy Young award in 2018 at the age of 30. Because deGrom got to the big leagues so late, deGrom won’t hit free agency until after the 2020 season when deGrom will hit age 33. Will deGrom ever get his big payday? It’s a question that’s up for debate. Rightfully so given his age and team control.
This information is just too much for Mike Francesa to handle. So much so that Francesa has flat out lost his mind. The always reliable twitter account @backaftathis shared Francesa’s rants about deGrom:
Not long after, Francesa totally contradicted himself. Francesa has gone insane:
This is just a typical day for Francesa. Mock a caller for not knowing what he’s talking about. Two days later, contradicts himself and takes credit for what the caller said earlier in the week. That’s just Francesa. Got to yell at a couple guys and have fun doing it.
I just can’t get enough of Francesa lately. He’s just hilarious. I can’t stop laughing when I watch. It’s better than anything you can find on Comedy Central. Francesa doesn’t try to be funny but he’s a hell of a lot more entertaining to watch than Kevin Hart is.
deGrom will earn $17 million in arbitration this year. He likely will earn somewhere in the $25 million range in arbitration a year from now if he puts together another season. It’s probably in the best interest to extend deGrom another 2-3 years but I doubt deGrom would take a short term extension.
Brodie Van Wagenen is in a tough spot. Van Wagenen was deGrom’s agent prior to accepting to Mets gm job. While he was deGrom’s agent, Van Wagenen screamed at the Mets for not getting an extension done. Oddly enough, now Van Wagenen is in that exact spot. Jacob deGrom is arguably one of the best pitchers in baseball. Unfortunately, he may never get the long term deal that he deserves.
