After a long-awaited period, Dallas Cowboys fans can rest once again. Dallas and Hall-of-Fame offensive guard Zack Martin has agreed to a restructured two-year contract worth $18 million per season, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter first reported Monday.
Before his deal was restructured, Martin was making only $13.5 and $14 million in the next two seasons. Martin ranked eighth in contract value for all guards in the NFL, behind guys like Chris Lindstrom, Quenton Nelson and Elgton Jenkins. Now with his new deal, Martin is all the way up to third on the list, barely passing Jenkins by $1 million in yearly salary.
Zack Martin is not only highly regarded as not only one of the NFL’s best guards, but of all time. In his time with the Cowboys, the 6-foot-4 guard has made eight Pro Bowls and eight All-Pro teams in his nine-year career.
Before reworking his new deal, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones made some interesting comments on paying Martin.
“Not really. Surprised is really not the word there. It’s very costly,” he said earlier this month. “That’s just where we are. There are huge, significant ramifications happening here by anybody’s measure, financially. So , you realize that not having him here, it could happen (via injury) on the next play. You got to put that one on and say you just move on here without him. You say that sounds like a concern. No, I’m just trying to give you how you really have to look at it.”
Now, with Martin happily signed, water is under the bridge between the Cowboys organization and their All-Pro guard. Can Martin stay healthy and help the Cowboys back into the playoffs once again? How did Martin’s contract turn out? Let us know in the comments down below.
