The Mike Gesicki that never was? That’s right. Zack Kuntz fits that mantra from head to toe. However, is it good enough to make an impact at the NFL level? Let’s review the Zack Kuntz 2023 NFL Draft profile.
I say Gesicki for several reasons. Kuntz originally attended Penn State, the same place Gesicki attended. Kuntz just never got the playing time so he transferred out to Old Dominion. Any NFL Draft analyst that says they studied 15 hours of Old Dominion football is lying to you. He also made a total of 15 starts in his college career so there isn’t much to go on anyway.
The tools here are what excite you. 6-foot-7, 255, with over 34-inch arms. If you’re building a tight end out of a factory, this is probably what you’re looking for. Oh, did I mention he also runs a 4.55 with a 40 inch broad jump? Yeah, we’re talking. You start to get hot and bothered over there reading this?
The blocking is a concern but I don’t think it’s a situation to where he can’t do it. It may be more of a leverage thing. 23 bench press reps with that arm length are really impressive. I thought the knee bend was good at the combine. Just feels raw more than anything. He’s also a former high jump champ so there could be some hidden leaping ability in the red area.
I’m not going to lie, I like Zack Kuntz. I like him a lot. In terms of later round tight end targets to take a flier on, this one might be my favorite. We’ll see how that tracks years from now but there is no denying the ceiling play here. The good news is you won’t have to spend an arm and a leg for this experiment either.
