The USC program under Lincoln Riley feels like it’s crumbling. After a rough first year in the Big 10, arguably the best player on the roster is heading elsewhere while having many years of eligibility remaining. Stud wide receiver Zachariah Branch is heading to the portal.
Pete Thamel over at ESPN was the first to report the news:
“The decision to move on was a tough decision,” Zachariah told ESPN. “I love USC! The hospitality and the love I received from everyone while being there was great. I just feel like embarking upon a new journey is what’s best for my future.”
“I am looking for a school that will help develop me, not only as a student-athlete, but help me grow as a person as well,” Zachariah said. “Somewhere that will allow me to prepare myself for the next level. I want to be surrounded by like-minded individuals who are chasing the same goals.”
Oh, and his brother Zion will be joining him too. By the way, this is not a Shedeur and Shilo situation. While Zachariah is the headliner and one of the most electric wide receivers in the sport, Zion is no bum. Zion was very much a top 100 recruit nationally. Zachariah is just a blue chip five star no doubter guy.
Branch, 5-foot-10, 175 wide receiver, notched 47 receptions for 503 yards and a score this past season. The numbers don’t really indicate the raw talent here. I’m sure nobody cares about this part but I already own him in fantasy and I compare him to a better version of Jaylen Waddle. Although, time will tell on that part.
The funny part of this announcement is the fact that the “student” part of the equation feels important here. The former Bishop Gorman product may surprise people with his next landing spot.
