Are we sure the Grizzlies have the right person in charge? I’m really not sure how Zach Kleiman has the authority to fire Taylor Jenkins and accept plausible deniability for his mess, but that’s where we’re at. Kleiman has been far from perfect running the Grizzlies, and Jake LaRavia is another example of his horrendous asset management techniques.
Kleiman admits the Grizzlies screwed up with Jake LaRavia. They should have picked up his rookie option.
“I think we should’ve picked up Jake LaRavia’s team option,” Kleiman said. “The mistake was there. I think Jake could’ve helped us down the stretch.”
Kleiman also admits the reason why they screwed up with LaRavia is because they thought the internal options they had were enough.
“I probably overweighted just how much of a burden they would have been able to put on in a playoff push,” Kleiman said.
LaRavia, 23, was selected by the Grizzlies 19th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. Memphis actually traded up to land the former Wake Forest product. After spending this past season with the Kings, LaRavia will actually hit unrestricted free agency this Summer. Still at a young age, LaRavia could latch on with a contender to play a deep bench role. Being around better players and learning from a winning environment is probably the best move for him this Summer.
With Sacramento, LaRavia posted 6.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.4 assists across 19.3 minutes per game in 66 contests. For a 6-foot-8 guy, there is some floor stretching stuff here too. Will be fascinating to see how this plays out in free agency.
