Zac Thomas 2021 NFL Draft Profile

The Appalachian State quarterback? That’s right. Zac Thomas is one of if not my favorite late round quarterback sleeper prospects in the entire 2021 NFL Draft. Does Thomas have a future in the NFL? Let’s examine his 2021 NFL Draft profile.

Before I begin, if you haven’t checked out our interview with Thomas, make sure to do that here. He was a blast to have on and our entire team is pulling for him.

The App State quarterback stands at 6-foot-1, 210. Thomas was a three-star recruit coming out of high school. The number one thing that stands out about Thomas is the wins. Thomas was the second winningest active quarterback in college football behind Trevor Lawrence. Thomas sported a record of 32-6 as a starter.

My first impression of Thomas was as a freshman against Penn State. Thomas stepped onto the field in his first collegiate start and stuck Trace McSorley in his back pocket. There was no question if you watched that game which quarterback was the legit NFL prospect. I’ll give you a hint, it wasn’t McSorley.

Thomas’ pure passing numbers aren’t eye popping. In 2020, Thomas completed 63.9% of his throws to go along with a 20-11 TD to INT ratio. However, Thomas was Sun Belt’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2018. He also won the MVP award at the FBS All Americans Tropical Bowl.

Thomas for the most part operated in the shotgun. He’s really good in that intermediate range picking spots in the defense. He doesn’t have a cannon, per se, but he’s a great anticipatory thrower. When forced to make plays off script, Thomas does a great job improvising.

Thomas’ best trait might be that rushing ability. During his App State career, Thomas posted 1,302 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns. Thomas might be able to run some of those gadget option plays if teams want to put him in that package. Only difference is, Thomas is a real duel threat quarterback.

I have Thomas ranked inside my top ten quarterbacks heading into the 2021 NFL Draft. The App State product might not even get drafted but he could eventually develop into a reliable back up while also proving rushing capabilities.
