Yuta Watanabe Signed With The Suns Because Of Kevin Durant?
Yuta Watanabe signed a contract with the Phoenix Suns this offseason. Watanabe was signed to improve the underwhelming depth on the Suns roster. We knew that Watanabe and Kevin Durant were teammates with the Nets. However, it appears that Durant played a more vital role than we even imagined in getting Watanabe to Phoenix.
Watanabe, 29, essentially admitted that he’s playing for the Suns right now because of Kevin Durant.
“He texted me and told me he wants to play with me again,” Watanabe told Sportskeeda. “That meant a lot to me. When someone like Kevin Durant reaches out to me and says stuff like that, it means a lot.”
Is it true he recruited you?
Watanabe: “Kind of (laughs). He texted me and told me he wants to play with me again. That meant a lot to me. When someone like Kevin Durant reaches out to me and says stuff like that, it means a lot.”
We’re only five games through the 2023-24 NBA Season so let’s not go crazy about Watanabe’s current numbers. However, this is a guy who’s proven to be a deadly 3-point sniper during his career. The Japanese-born lefty is converting 38.8% of his attempts from beyond the arc during his career. For a Suns team that’s trying to add depth, it’s hard to blame them for going this route. Every team needs a guy that can just cash home the three-ball. Watanabe does just that for every team he’s been on.
