Long-time CEO of YouTube, Susan Wojcicki, stepped down from her position on Feb. 16 following nearly 10 years in the role. Wojcicki is to be replaced by Neal Mohan, her long-time second-in-command, according to multiple sources, including IGN.
Despite leaving the position with YouTube, Wojcicki is still going to be playing a role within the corporate framework at Google. A company that, while she didn’t found, Wojcicki played a vital role in even during its beginning years, from renting out her garage for server space, to managing marketing and more.
Now, Wojcicki will be staying on within an advisory position for now. Giving guidance to the company as it continues to expand and grow into new and existing markets. As for Mohan, while it is unknown where he will take the world’s largest and most popular video-sharing site, no doubt he will be continuing down the path Wojcicki set.
Still, this isn’t to say that the aforementioned path is popular to the YouTube community.
It’s no secret that during Wojcicki’s tenure as CEO, she made a lot of users and creators angry and upset regarding where the site was heading and how it was managed. From constant and, more often than not, unpopular changes to the site’s algorithm, confusing monetization policies and a growing trend of having only un-skippable ads.
Alongside the policies for the site’s moderation, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the community isn’t too sad to see her go.
With Wojcicki out and Mohan in, the future of YouTube is certainly not guaranteed to be all sunshine and rainbows, especially as Mohan worked alongside Wojcicki when implementing many of the sites changes — the good, the bad, and the ugly. Still, we’ll just have to see what Mohan does and doesn’t do.
Here’s to hoping he does right by the creators and users of YouTube.
