Yeshiva Maccabees: A DIII Hoops Powerhouse

The longest winning streak in college basketball belongs to the Yeshiva Maccabees, who have won 50 consecutive games dating back to the 2019-20 season. Located in New York City, Yeshiva University is an Orthodox Jewish institution with just over 3,000 undergraduates. The Macs are ranked No. 1 in the D3Hoops.com Top 25 after receiving the No. 2 preseason ranking. They are defeating their opponents by an average of almost 30 points. Yeshiva has appeared in the last three Skyline Conference championship games, winning the title in 2018 and 2020.

Yeshiva’s Three-Headed Monster

How has Yeshiva Basketball become so dominant? Well it certainly never hurts to have two All-Americans on your team. Senior guard Ryan Turell is averaging 26.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest and shooting 42% from three. He is leading all DIII players in points scored. The 6-7 Los Angeles native had NBA teams reach out to his coaches for film before the season began. Although there is only one DIII alumnus in the NBA (Duncan Robinson), Turell has as good a chance as any. Their other All-American, senior Gabriel Leifer, is averaging 13.1 points and 10.4 rebounds per game on 50% from the field and 44% from deep. The team’s second leading scorer, senior guard Eitan Halpert, has posted 18.1 points per game and 47% from three while attempting over seven threes a game.

The previous two DIII National Championship tournaments were cancelled due to COVID-19. Is this the year the Maccabees can finish with a national title?
