New York got their wish. Well, at least partly. That was for the greatly slumping Outfielder Joey Gallo to be removed for good. The Dodgers gambled and traded for him at the deadline on August 2nd. On paper, everything looked good, but at what cost for Yankee fans?
Joey Gallo knew he would not be a Yankee after August 2nd. Playing for NY, he slashed .159/.282/.339 with 12 home runs and 114 strikeouts. As a result, Gallo was the blame for many of the team’s problems from the fans and the media, despite the Yankees having a healthy lead in the AL East.
New York has a tendency that if you perform badly, the fans take it personally. Before and after Gallo packed his bags, he heard it from practically everyone. Stepping outside his apartment, he would get dirty looks on the street and heckled just trying to live day to day. That’s not all, though.
Right after the Yanks cut ties with him, their TV announcer, Michael Kay, had some choice words for him.
“He deserved to be booed. I don’t think the fans were extra special hard on him. I look at what the fans did to Giancarlo Stanton when he first got here. That was unfair, I mean, the first game he ever played here, they booed him. This guy earned the boos.” – Michael Kay

No wonder he never wanted to leave his apartment. Another player currently dealing with harsh critique from Yankee fans is shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Let’s just say he’s not doing as horribly, as he’s posting a modest .265 batting average. His OPS, however, sits at a dismal .622 with zero home runs.
Kiner-Falefa recently dealt with a different monster. Social media.
Oh. This wasn’t to Isiah, either. It was sent to his dad. That’s a line you don’t cross.
This toxic negativity could really take a hit at the Yankees signing big-name free agents in the offseason. I mean, why would anyone want to go there if god forbid they go through a little slump? The season consists of 162 games, and these men put themselves through so much in order to do their best.
Sadly, this has been going on for years and years. One glaring example was Roger Maris receiving death threats when in pursuit of Babe Ruth’s single-season home run record in 1961.
On a much brighter note, it’s safe to say that Gallo is very, very happy to be out of New York.
“I’m living by the beach right now so that’s pretty nice compared to New York. No offense to New York but I was living in a pretty small apartment for the same price. It’s nice to have some sand, the waves.” -Gallo

The pressure of the Yankees franchise would make anyone nervous. You’re not even allowed to have facial hair as a player (another thing Gallo touched on). Those 27 championships are up on a pedestal, and the Yankee fans look up to them every day.
