Barcelona Juan Laporta announced that Xavi Hernandez will no longer be the manager of the Spanish side on Friday in a team statement.
Xavi will manage the final match of the La Liga season on Sunday but will be removed following that.
This story has been going on for months with Xavi stating he would be leaving at the end of the season following a bad run of form earlier in 2024. However, Laporta and Xavi had mentioned that the manager would fulfill his contract through 2025 just a month ago.
“FC Barcelona wishes to thank Xavi for his work as coach, as well as for his inimitable career as a player and as team captain, and wishes him every future success in the world,” said the Barcelona statement.
This will end a three-year tenure as manager of Barcelona for Xavi who took over the club in November 2021.
Over his time as manager, Xavi finished with a record of 88-24-29. He also guided the Spanish giants to the La Liga title in the 2022-23 season as well as the Spanish Super Cup in the same season.
Prior to his managing career, Xavi spent 17 seasons as a player for Barcelona’s first team before finishing his playing career at Al Saad in the Qatar Stars League. He also managed Al Saad from May 2019 until Barcelona came calling.
This season, Barcelona has finished in second with a match to play. However, they sit 12 points behind archrivals Real Madrid who have won Spain’s top division.
There were a few names being thrown around for the next Barcelona manager. Rafa Márquez, Barcelona B team manager, and Thomas Tuchel, Bayern Munich’s outgoing manager, were both in the running. Despite them, it appears that Barcelona will be hiring former German national team and Bayern Munich manager Hansi Flick.
Flick had a great tenure with Bayern Munich that includes winning the treble in 2020 by winning the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal, and UEFA Champions League. Unfortunately, that success did not carry to the German national team as Flick became the first manager to be sacked by the nation since it was formed in 1926.
