WWE was reportedly interested in Marty Scurll before sexual assault allegations
Marty Scurll was once a popular star with online wrestling fans and could have potentially taken off in WWE if not for serious allegations.
Much like the #MeToo movement, the #SpeakingOut movement provided alleged victims of sexual abuse an outlet to expose offenders. #SpeakingOut was, however, only targeted at pro wrestlers. Many stars were named in the various allegations, like Marty Scurll, and some even parted ways with WWE thereafter. But despite the many names mentioned in the movement, no official charges have been made against any pro wrestlers–former or current.
According to Dave Meltzer during a 2021 episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, WWE had some vested interest in bringing Marty Scurll into their promotion. However, once the allegations were made against him, the promotion backed down. In the same year, Scurll also parted ways with ROH, despite being one of the most in-demand pro wrestlers of late-2019/early 2020.
Marty Scurll was as popular as The Young Bucks at the time of his sexual abuse allegations, and could easily have ended up in AEW or WWE. It’s unknown how his career could have turned out, had the allegations not turned up. Scurll has struggled to find work in the industry since, as he’s effectively been blacklisted by most promotions. Despite this, he continues to perform on and off today.
WCW veteran Konnan defended his booking of Marty Scurll
The WCW veteran currently handles booking for the Mexican-based promotion, AAA. While WWE might have been interested in Marty Scurll, Konnan has notably booked the star since his allegations. This led to some backlash from online fans and resulted in the veteran addressing the concerns personally.
During an episode of his Keepin’ It 100 podcast, Konnan hit back at the criticisms and pointed out that Marty Scurll was never convicted of anything.
“Marty Scurll did that with a [sic] in England. I think that’s a legal age, am I correct or am I incorrect?… So she’s one year older than the thing it’s in the United States, where it’s considered bad,” he said. “So if in his country it’s not illegal what do I give a f*ck about it? Was he convicted? The guy’s already ostracized, nobody will use him for like two years, and guess what? To me he’s a bigger star than Andretti, Yuta, or Daniel Garcia, I’ll put all my money on that.”
Since Marty Scurll is already set to appear in AAA in September this year, it seems like Konnan is holding tightly onto his convictions. Unfortunately for the alleged victim and any fans touched by the situation, until he’s convicted of any crimes, Scurll will likely continue to find work somewhere in the industry.
