I Wouldn’t Blame Ime Udoka For Resigning
If you’re reading this post and don’t understand how we got to this point, let me give you a quick refresher before you think I’m trying to pull some clickbait cheese about Celtics head coach Ime Udoka.
News came out super late last night that Udoka was on the verge of facing a significant suspension because of an improper relationship with a team employee. It feels like there have to be more details here but as it stands, it would appear that this is the Celtics doing and he’s on the verge of facing a season-long suspension for throwing it down in a consensual way with a female team employee.
Again, we do not know what happened with this woman that he was throwing it down with. Thus far, the reports indicate it was consensual so it doesn’t appear that there is any foul play at the moment.
With that being said, Chris Mannix has reported that if Udoka gets the season-long suspension handed down via the team, he’s considering resigning:
Let’s make another thing clear here before I begin. I am not defending his actions. I am not blasting his actions. That is not my place to judge. What’s important here is that the punishment does not fit the crime.
Robert Sarver was suspended for a year for this. Sarver is going to end up selling the team but that’s only because of public blowback. Why should the punishment be the exact same here?
How about a few more. Gilbert Arenas got suspended 50 games for bringing a gun in the locker room. Latrell Sprewell got 68 games for choking his head coach. We’re going to suspend Udoka 82 games? For what? Because he threw down and someone snitched on him for the sake of going viral on social media?
So, yeah. You know what? I don’t blame Udoka here at all. Threaten to quit cause this sort of suspension is outrageous given some of the other examples we’re working with here. It’s embarrassing this story got leaked, to begin with. Udoka took what some considered a broken Celtics team all the way to the NBA Finals. I’m quite sure that guy will get another job again. He doesn’t need them.
