The Bruins stink. Things can change between now and the 2025 NHL Trade Deadline but it’s pretty obvious that Boston isn’t a real Stanley Cup contender. They’re not even a lock to make the playoffs. As things stand now as of the publication of this article, the Bruins are in 6th place in the Atlantic and other teams have games in hand on them. At some point, the Bruins need to hit the reset button and that could even mean trading Brad Marchand!?!
Former Bruins defenseman Mike Milbury said in a recent radio interview that the Bruins likely have only three players who are considered untouchable. Marchand is not one of them.
“I think it’s time to make sure you’ve given every one of your potential prospects, and I say potential because they’re – I’m not sure if Poitras or Lysell or even Lohrei, who’s had some pretty good luck lately, we need to find out from the Bruins perspective if these guys have any future,” Milbury said.
“There’s a risk you might not make the playoffs, but you’ve got to look at all your young players, and you have to calculate towards the trading deadline, what do you want to give up?” he continued.
“As far as I’m concerned, there are only three players there that are untouchable, and that’s Swayman, Pastrnak, and McAvoy,” Milbury said.
Would the Bruins really trade their captain? Who knows if this rumor is even true but if the Bruins get a tasty offer for Marchand, it’s certainly something they have to consider. Especially when you consider the fact that Marchand is an impending free agent after the conclusion of this season. If Boston can’t get an extension done by the deadline, certainly that could pave the way for a trade more than anything.
Marchand, 36, has lost a step but he’s also the perfect guy to add to any team for a playoff run. Anyone who has watched Marchand play knows he just has that rat quality. If he’s on your team, you love him. If he’s not on your team, you hate him. If he’s really on the table, he could absolutely swing a playoff series.
Either way, if Boston really falls out of a playoff spot by the deadline, teams should absolutely be calling to see if they can pluck Marchand.
