Chris Beard has left Texas Tech and gone to an in-state rival in Texas University. Chris Beard has made quite a name for himself these past couple of seasons. While Texas Tech was usually considered a football school, it has become quite a balance of football and basketball since Chris Beard got there in 2016. Since 2016, he has at least 18 wins per season with Tech. His first year and his last year with Texas Tech were probably considered his worst years. He had his lowest number of wins (18) in those years along with being 7th and 6th respectively in their conference standings.
Chris Beard really made noise in 2018 and in 2019. The Texas Tech Raiders were dancing all the way to at least the Elite Eight in those NCAA March Madness Tournaments. In 2018 they made the Elite Eight. but in 2019 Texas Tech made it to the National Championship. Tech only lost to Virginia by 8 in the Natty. That is when Beard became a household name. I’m sure Tech would have made the NCAA Tournament in 2020 if it hadn’t been for COVID-19. They made the tournament in 2021 but were knocked out in the Round of 32.
Once again, Texas Tech has really never been sought as a basketball school, but it was with Chris Beard there. Now, he’s going to Texas, which has most of the time been a balance between football and basketball. Texas has always had the resources to scout and recruit better players to their program. Chris Beard was making it happen with solid but not over the top talent with Texas Tech. Lord only knows what he can do with better talent. Can he accomplish what Shaka Smart couldn’t and get this team past the Round of 64? Obviously. That’s not even a tall task for Beard at this point. I think this Texas team was good, and I think they have the potential to at least get to the Final Four with Beard at the helm. Time will tell.
